Apple to Cut MacBook Prices

[EGG](CNN) -- Apple on Wednesday said it would cut the price of its 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display while simultaneously updating it with faster processors.

The 15-inch model is also getting improved specs, although its price remains the same.

The 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro now starts at $1,499 for 128GB of solid-state flash storage, and $1,699 for 256GB of storage. The higher-end model also includes a more robust 2.6GHz Intel Core i5 processor.

The 15-inch model still starts at $2,199, but now that gets you a quad-core 2.4GHz Core i7 processor. If you want the best of the best, you can now get a 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro with a quad-core 2.7GHz Core i7 processor with 16GB of RAM for $2,799.

In addition to the adjustments to the Retina MacBook Pro line, Apple also took the price of its 13-inch MacBook Air down a notch: The 13-inch model with 256GB of flash storage now costs $1,399.

The new prices and specs are effective today, both online and in Apple Stores.

The price cuts and speed bumps of the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro make a lot of sense in the light of reviews, which praised the laptop's high-resolution 2,560 x 1,600 display, but lamented that it didn't have the same kind of power to drive those pixels as its larger 15-inch sibling.

"What's inescapable is that this first version of the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro isn't a winner when it comes to price and performance," wrote Mashable senior tech analyst Christina Warren in her review. "It's just a bit too expensive."

Will the price cuts and improved specs make you more inclined to buy a MacBook in the next few weeks? Let us know in the comments.

I might go the hackintosh route for my next computer tho. They charge too much just for OSX.

If you have an Apple computer, I have no idea how y'all prefer Android phones. The iPhone is definitely not better than the GSIII (for example), but the syncing you get between an iDevice and an Apple computer is second to none. Absolutely flawless.

MBP + iPhone + iCloud >>>>>

Having my mail synced perfectly, having iA Writer synced on my macbook and iPhone, keeping all my contacts synced in real time, the list goes on and on.

I rarely preach about my Apple fandom, but they got it right.

I'm a Mac guy myself, I don't fu*k with PCs in no way shape or form. I've had both iPhones and Androids (currently on a Galaxy SII). Can't say I'm not happy with it but the ONLY gripe I have is when it comes to group texting. Android can't touch the iPhone. I've used Handcent and Go SMS which supports group texting but not without huge amounts of lag and sometimes dropped messages. Android needs to get with the program in that respect.

This.

15 inch Macbook Pro Retina / Samsung Galaxy S3 over here.

I upgraded to my boosted 15 inch Retina not too long ago. Still have my 2010 13 inch Macbook Pro as a backup. It is flawless three years later.... I just upgraded just to upgrade. I''ll never buy another PC. Hell, it pains me to use a PC at someone else's house or business.

Mac / Android = best of both worlds.

You mean OSX itself? Just cop a disc from someone. The OSX disc doesn't require a serial key or anything. You can literally get the "one user" copy and install it on multiple computers with no hacking whatsoever. I don't even know why they sell a "family" or multiple user version, they're basically the same thing.

Yea, I can't really agree with you here. A Mac is an investment in my opinion... I used to buy PC laptops because I just couldn't see myself spending "all that money" on a Mac, after buying 3 laptops in 4 years (due to viruses and them just crapping out) I decided to at least give Mac a try... I'll never go back. Years later my laptop still works like day one :agreement1:
