Thursday, January 18th, 2007:
We know everyone is concerned over the recent raid and arrest of DJ Drama and DJ Don Cannon. While we won't get into the actual case, we feel we should touch on the possible consequences of it. Mixtapes have evolved so much since their inception, and are now a medium for upcoming artists to get their voice heard, as well as a way for mainstream artists to deliver street music and keep relevant in between album releases.
While they say they are not targetting mixtapes, actions speak louder than words. Should the RIAA decide to start attacking the mixtape culture, many changes will need to take place within the industry to cope. While we will continue to lobby and support DJs, we will comply with any and all requests from the RIAA.
In the case of an all out war on mixtapes, DatPiff will effectively remove all mixtapes from the site containing music found on retail CDs of any artist represented by the RIAA. This includes compilations (even if some tracks of the mixtape are original), Best Of's etc. We will of course continue to post mixtapes from upcoming/unsigned artists, blends and any other material we feel would not fall under copyright infringement given that we have permission from the creator(s).
They still got the mixtapes on there tho...
