Why do Drake stans feel so threatened by J. Cole? |

| By Ghost Writer - 02-15-2013, 12:59 PM - Boxden > The Hip-Hop Spot I've never seen another rapper's fan base act so threatened by one other particular artist. Is it because they genuinely know he's better or does it just have to do with the natural jealousy your average Drake fan possesses? |

| Yeah but a lot of "Jay Stans" And "Nas Stans" like both artists. Drake stans literally are scare to like J. Cole. Not to mention, that even if they did feel threatened it makes more sense because they were actually beefing. Cole and Drake are cool with each other and Drake fans are still shook. | |

| As a Drake fan, J. Cole has bored me for the last 2 years. He's the definition of a safe rapper, unable to progress within his music or even maintain the quality of his earlier mixtapes. He doesn't exactly standout in any area, he was the token "backpack rapper" of our generation until Kendrick stole his spot and blew him out the water. In comparison to Drake, he's no threat musically or commercially. Their content doesn't match up at all. Cole will impress the average rap head more because of his topics rather than actual execution. Drake relies more on his song-writing and ability to put together a track to impress his fans. The content of his music doesn't sit well with many rap heads on bx or a similar forum, but it seems to work for the rest of the world. In 2010 this conversation would be completely different. In the last 2 years, Drake's experimented with new flows, new producers, and became the highlight feature of at least half the rap hits of 2012. J. Cole's released the same music he's been making since The Come Up. Saving songs from 2008 to put on his debut is proof of that. I'm one to prefer artists who can progress their music through time, even though for some that's not necessary. In J. Cole's case, all he's done is regress from his earlier music. Getting lazier with his flow and delivery, not showing as much mic presence as before. Take Care is critically acclaimed, commercially successful, and now has a Grammy to it's name. He's done almost no wrong lately, took control of enough demographics to release any type of song he wants and still have it be commercially successful. He doesn't make music for everyone, if you're 25+ chances you may not enjoy Drake's music outside of a party. With that said, it's undeniable he's running the game at this point and the only new rapper that could possibly pose as a threat to him, is none other than this man. [pic] | |

As a Drake fan since Comeback Season, So Far Gone & Thank Me Later are far cries from the emcee he was on that tape (at least lyrically) much like Cole World was for J. Cole. Let's not act like Drake didn't regress himself lyrically. He went from Phonte / early Ye to strictly 808s Ye with no autotune. My problem with Drake now is the feigning of a struggle. He wants so badly come off as if he's had a hard life & it comes across as disingenuous crystal clear. At least with Cole you know the struggle was legitimate. With Drake, you know he's embellishing for the sake of substance...

| Thing is, Drake in his mixtape days murkS J Cole at his best and a lot of people don't think Drake has that capability. I like Drake's music because hes one of the few artists actually really taking chances out here and putting out great music in various lanes and influences. Dude is really a once in a lifetime artist. If it seems like I defend him too much, its because I want to get people to realize that you can't count Drake out when you hold him to a different standard. Dude is one of the best when it comes to making R&B lyrics and hes not even a singer. Dude showed in 2012, even, that he could murk anyone on their own songs without putting out his own. I defend him because I don't feel like he gets respect from the core of hip-hop. I honestly feel like to some extent, hes UNDERappreciated by those that should recognize his talent the most. | |

It's not regression, he just found his footing musically. There's no need to rap like Phonte when he's not making that type of music anymore. He's been said since the creation of SFG he wanted to blend R&B with Hip hop. TML was a regression but he grew from that mishap and comeback making quality music his fans expected from his mixtape days. Even his seem just as good as ever. Like I said, his content wouldn't sit well with everyone. I'm not going to defend him saying he started from the bottom, but let's not act like this is Rick Ross calling himself a kingpin. He has the ability to make phrases catchy, which is already seen through everyone making their own versions of SFTB.

| Kreemy gets it. The point is I don't defend Drake because I think hes better than J Cole (He is), but rather because people seem to not APPRECIATE what Drake is doing out here. ...WITH EASE. Forget commercial appeal and success. Sales don't mean anything to the consumption of music as consumers. The QUALITY Drake has introduced to the game has been pretty much unparalleled and to some extent imitated by his peers. There are only a few truly creative artists out there right now and Drake is certainly one of them. J Cole isn't taking any risks out here. He has the image and sound that appeals to "backpackers" and "hip hop elitists" but hes certainly not doing his lane any justice. There are artists that could do J Cole, BETTER than J. Cole himself (e.g. Big KRIT). Hes not that nice of a rapper even when you can tell hes trying and his production sounds severely lacking more often than not. | |
