The West Coast has given the rap game some of it’s biggest stars and legends, but, according to Rick Ross, Dom Kennedy is “the West Coast’s finest.”

Kennedy has been making a name for himself over the past few years through his grind and unique sound. Consequently, rumors began to swirl recently that the bawse wanted to add the free agent to his growing Maybach Music Group.

But Kennedy says that him and Ross don’t have any business ties right now although he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of joining his team. “I can’t really say I wouldn’t do anything, I don’t like to ever be in situations where I say ‘I wouldn’t do this or I wouldn’t do this’ until it’s on the table,” he tells XXLMag.com.

Kennedy adds that up to now, the relationship between him and Rozay has been more or less a mentorship.

“My relationship with Ross I would say is more like a younger homie older homie type of thing,” Kennedy says. “He’s one of those people, you’ll find in rap music when your coming up certain people will help you for the benefit of themselves and there are other people who will genuinely help you to just keep the rap game alive. They’ll give you info that other people might even charge you for, he’s just one of the people that has reached out to me to work, to give me advice, to let me see his grind.”

What exactly does Ricky Ross see in the young MC? Well, to hear Dom say it it is his constant hustle that caught the MMG boss’ attention.

“I think that he saw me as somebody who was just consistent, those people that you just can’t really ignore because they gonna be around and they gonna get better every time,” he says. “Each time their moves get smarter and a little bit sharper. I guess in a way you can say he’s like that but on a bigger level.”

Kennedy is currently working on the Yellow Album, which he says “doesn’t sound like anything of the past, it sounds like tomorrow.” The album is expected to feature Ross and some other artists of “bigger names, but more importantly its people that I admire and that fit the type of music that I’m making,” he adds.

Although details about the album’s features are scant right now, Kennedy did say there will be one legendary artist that will appear on the set. “I want to leave that one for the album but it’s definitely a west coast legend,” he shares.

The Yellow album will feature production mainly from THC, who worked on Kendrick Lamar’s high acclaimed Seciton.80 project. It will also feature production from Kennedy’s DJ Drew Byrd and Dahi, the latter who has worked with Pac Div. —Nicholas Sella
