Two would-be robbers' plans to hold up customers at a Webster Bank on High Street were foiled by bank employees who were suspicious of the men and called police.

The suspects, 46-year-old Robert Alverson and 52-year-old John Filipetti, parked their truck in the bank parking lot as they cased the ATM for potential victims on Friday around noon, police said.

Filipetti wore a motorcycle helmet over a ski mask, alarming bank employees who noted that there were no motorcycles in the lot, police said.


Employees watched Filipetti walk up to the ATM and then walked back to the truck. The suspects drove away, but returned a short time later, police said.

They attempted to escape from officers who responded to the scene, but were stopped and arrested, police said. Alverson and Filipetti gave police conflicting stories, but later confessed their plans to rob a customer at the ATM, police said.

Surveillance footage shows Filipetti approach the ATM twice, once while a female customer withdrew money. Filipetti told police he chose not to rob the woman because she only withdrew $20.

Police said Alverson was in possession of an illegal switch blade knife. Filipetti was in possession of heroin paraphernalia, police said.

The suspects are each charged with second-degree breach of peace, attempted second-degree robbery, conspiracy to commit second-degree robbery. Alverson is also charged with weapons in a motor vehicle.

Filipetti is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and second-degree criminal mischief.
