The spate of k!llings over the weekend being linked to street gangs is fueling speculation it could be tied to the mafia and that a gang war is brewing.

Three murks happened in the span of 48-hours: Chenier Dupuy, the reputed leader of the Bo-Gars, one of the major street gangs in the city, was murked in the parking lot of the Galeries d'anjou shopping centre Friday night. A few hours later, a well known street gang member with close ties to Dupuy, Lamartine Paul Sévère, was slain in Laval. Then yesterday afternoon, a man in his 30's was shot to [rip] in his home on Côte-des-neiges road.

Experts such as National Post organized crime reporter and author Adrian Humphreys say they believe their links to reputed mafia boss Vito Rizzuto and his imminent release from prison may have something to do with it.

"Is someone clearing the way, clearing the way for any potential allies to reduce his ability to avenge the attack on his family or is this someone preparing the city to make Vito's return a safer one?"

Rizzuto was jailed in the U.S. in 2007 after pleading guilty to charges in connection with the 1981 murks of members of New York’s Bonnano Mafia clan. He is scheduled for release in October.

Several members of the Rizzuto family and close[..]ociates of Vito Rizzuto have been murked over the past several years, including Vito's son, Nick Jr. and his father, Nicolo.

Bloc MP and criminologist Maria Mourani said seeing that the third victim was a member of the Italian mob, she can draw the link to Rizzuto.

"All these people are in the same network," Mourani said.

Both expect retaliation in the coming weeks and months. Humphreys lists other possible motives such as fights over drug turf and leadership tug-of-wars, something Mourani is discounting for the moment. But whatever the reason, Humphreys said he expects the violence could escalate, possibly to the levels of the biker wars.

"You don't go after a guy like Chenier without being prepared for any response," Humphreys said.

"The signals are coming that maybe the same sort of uncertainty and conflict is on the horizon."
