| Five p.m. rolled around and the Al Dunlap practice fields were buzzing again. The players were in their jerseys, gold helmets on and everyone ready to practice. The mood was typical of a first day of camp—energetic, happy and focused. Florida State was only able to get in 45 minutes of action due to in-climate weather on its first day of fall camp. That is, until the first bit of thunder was heard around 20 minutes into Florida State's warmups and the fields were emptied within minutes, as the team headed for shelter to avoid the in-climate weather. The delay lasted for a little more than an hour and the rain came down in sheets the entire time. By the time everyone headed back out onto the practice fields, the conditions were far from playable. A moat of about an inch of water had formed around the practice fields and head coach Jimbo Fisher did not want his players to risk getting hurt. So everyone waited another 30 minutes. After the drainage-delay concluded, it appeared as though Florida State would be in the clear as the sun was shining bright for the most part. In what limited action we saw, Chris Thompson and Devonta Freeman both looked to be fine. They were moving without any real hints of pain or discomfort and appeared to be their normal selves. Wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin looked to have turn the corner physically. Penn State transfer, tight end Kevin Haplea, had an impressive physical presence and appeared to fit in just fine with his new teammates. Bobby Hart and Bryan Stork were taking turns at first team right tackle and Menelik Watson wasn't shy about being vocal and getting physical in the trenches. However, before the Seminoles could garner much momentum, lightning struck for the second time and shortly after Fisher would cancel the practice all together. It's well known that Florida State has to constantly battle weather, especially during its fall camp in early August. The forecast doesn't look promising for the rest of the week either, with chances of thunderstorms being relatively high each day over the next few days. By Sean Grimm Young corners asked to step up Four years ago, losing a player like Greg Reid would have been difficult for the Seminoles to overcome. But now coach Jimbo Fisher feels Florida State has depth, which means there are plenty of options to take over Reid’s spot. “That’s why we recruit secondary guys like we do,” Fisher said. “You have plenty of options.” Fisher said that Nick Waisome has the No. 1 job – but that coaches are exploring all of their options. Waisome is 5-foot-10, about two inches taller than Reid. And, much like Reid, Waisome is known for his instinctive play, speed and technique. Fisher said he and defensive coordinator Mark Stoops have sought athletes that could play corner or safety. They landed the nation’s top corner, Lamarcus Joyner, a few years ago but moved him to safety before the 2011 season (and Fisher said Monday that Joyner could move back to corner). And Terrence Brooks has also played both positions for FSU. The Seminoles also signed the nation’s top corner, Ronald Darby, in February. And coaches could decide to move Rhodes’ backup, the 6-foot-3 Keelin Smith, over to Reid’s spot. While FSU has options, the players aren’t experienced. Waisome had just one tackle a year ago as a true freshman, and Smith redshirted. Brooks, a junior, has the most experience. He had 17 tackles in 2011 and saw significant playing time during FSU’s bowl win over Notre Dame, sealing the victory with a fourth-quarter interception. By Bob Ferrente Haplea welcomed to Florida State Jimbo Fisher reiterated again Monday that Florida State isn’t out to recruit Penn State players away from Happy Valley. But when a player has already decided to leave and is interested in FSU, then Fisher is happy to consider the situation. That was the case with junior tight end Kevin Haplea, who recently transferred to Florida State from Penn State and has three years to play his final two seasons of eligibility. Fisher said that the Seminoles initially recruited Haplea out of North Hunterdon High School in Annandale, N.J., and the FSU coaches already knew they liked him when he called to gauge their interest. “He made contact and he was definitely going to leave Penn State and we were one of the schools he would be very interested in if we would be interested in him,” Fisher said. “We evaluated our situation and we had a scholarship – we were at 84 scholarships – we had an official (visit), we evaluated film on the young man. “He started as a freshman and a sophomore at different times and played (at Penn State). We watched him play and a (he is a) quality player, great guy. We loved him out of high school. Great student. Great guy. To me, it was almost a no-brainer.” Haplea would’ve been Penn State’s most experienced tight end. The former three-star prospect played in every game a year ago, caught three pa#ses for 21 yards and a touchdown. He was also part of blocking unit that helped the Nittany Lions rush for 4.2 yards per carry and allowed the fewest sacks in the Big Ten. And at 6-4, 242 pounds, Haplea has the size and athleticism that Fisher covets on the outside edges. “We knew him and thought it would be another big, athletic body that we thought could affect and help us win, who has played in a lot of big-time games, big-time environments, can block and run, can catch, do a lot of things,” Fisher said. “It was like getting a free agent at the end. We had cap room.” By Tim Linafelt | |

| Let's make this clear for dumba#ses like Dedos. I don't look at stars anymore when recruiting I swear I don't. That was a trap that we feel into when Bobby Bowden was here. We fell in love with recruiting straight 4 and 5 stars and them niccas ended up not producing !! on the field. When Jimbo recruits he looks at so much more like potential, mindset, attitude, work ethic ish like that. Whatever three star we have I believe will produce probably better than most 4 and 5 stars Miami and Florida recruit. For example three stars that we recruited under Jimbo include: Terrence Brooks, Bjorn Werner, Amp McCloud (2*), Jarred Haggins, Vince Williams, Everitt Dawkins, Andrew Datko, Nick MoodyBrandon Jenkins just to name a few and all of those 3 stars would start easily at Miami and Florida EASILY. So I don't look at stars when dealing with Jimbo because he obviously knows what he's doing Last edited by F.A.M.E.M.O.B.; 08-06-2012 at 10:51 PM.. | |
