ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Bulls' home opener Friday night against the Sacramento Kings is guaranteed to be a hair-raising experience for the first 10,000 adult fans through the United Center doors.
That's because they will be receiving free Afro wigs in honor of what is being marketed as ''Ben Wallace 'Fro Night.''
But Wallace, the Bulls' big free-agent signee last summer, is not sure he will go with the 'fro.
''I usually don't go 'fro on the giveaway,'' said Wallace, who conceded that it could be a game-time decision. ''I don't know, it usually just happens.''
The Bulls center seemingly has no problem with the team using his hair as a marketing tool. In fact, a Google search found that his former team, the Detroit Pistons, still is selling ''Fear The 'Fro'' car flags at PalaceLockerRoomStore.com -- though the price has been cut from $10 to $5.
''You always want to give the fans something they can relate to, something they can have a little fun with,'' Wallace said. ''When we get the fans in there and they've got their wigs on, that lets you know they're definitely going to be into the game.
''Then all you have to do, once you get onto the floor, is give them something to cheer about. And before long, you're playing in front of a great crowd.''
Wallace wouldn't mind making himself available for product endorsements in Chicago.
''I don't go looking for it,'' he said. ''But if the opportunity presents itself, and as long as it's not something I'm going to be embarrassed about, I'd consider doing it.''
