Just got an android...what is ROOT?

I just switched from and iPhone to and android.

What exactly is this ROOT thing? Is it the equivilant (sp) to a jailbreak?

What does it do???

I have an HTC Inspire 4G..

Can someone break this down to me in simple form.

Good youtube tutorials would be good too.

rooting gives you admin rights

so you are able to manipulate the os as you please
