What time is it?

 What time is it?
By TiPZ - 09-15-2009, 04:53 AM - Boxden > The Faculty of Science

Check this.

Ok I'm looking at the time right now, its 12:49 am, September 15th 2009.

What does this exactly mean? I realized some crazy !! the other day.

Now this "time" we all live by, who made it up?

Like who woke up one day and made months, years, minutes, seconds, milliseconds. Who measured 60 seconds in 1 minute? Do you get what I am saying?

now I have another question. When did this TIME start? Time is very precise, THERE IS NO WAY time can go off track (too fast, too slow) it is a perfect system. Now my question is, back in the day, I mean way back. Before "time" was even around. When did they say.....GOOO!!!! and started the time we all live by? Why is it September 15th? Why not September 16th? Why 2009? 2009 years since the year 0? Do you understand? I'm trying to figure out when did "they" said GOO! and time started, and the clock began ticking. The seconds turned to minutes, then hours, days, months, and years. I dont understannnnddddd!

Our calendar is Roman (presuming of course that you are in western society)
Minutes and hours are units of time that did not come into use at least until the industrial revolution

Ok on second thought, the sundial clock was around as early as 3500 BC. And according to this site: (they did not list their sources though.) , egyptians divided days into hours and the idea of minutes came from the Sumerian secksagesimal system. But I really wonder to what extent they used this system to conduct their lives.

I maintain that it did not become of real importance until the industrial age but I could be wrong

I've had those same thoughts...according to record, time zero is the time of the [rip] of Jesus Christ. But I'm already guessing you know about B.C. and A.D. Essentially, modern systems of time are just another tool to keep us asleep (slaves).

Zero time, however, is another story completely.

Yea I figured time zero was when Jesus died. What I really don't get is when time really started, like the standardized clock we all live by everyday. [pic] it amazes me

As far as time (hr, min, sec), these are just man made measurements applied as intervals to describe the passing of time or events. Obviously these measurements apply strictly to earth. That being said, time on Mercury, Titan, Neptune, among others, is completely different. The concept remains the same.

The conversion from 60 seconds to one minute make measurements much simpler. When you start dealing with large numbers, it would be practical to make these conversions.

No one know when, where, or how it began, time that is. It would not be wrong to[..]ume that it has always been and will always be, or that it began with the Big Bang and will end with the Big Crunch.

What do you mean time is perfect or never goes off track? Have you even heard of the twin paradox?

I dont even feel like getting into the calendar thing, Im sleepy as !!

nope... way before industrial revolution. here in europe we got clocks from the middle age, and we still have huge bells go off every 15 mins on every church here.
1 strike for 15 mins after whole hr.
2 for half past
3 for quarter before,
and 6 double strikes when its exactly 6, 7 double for when its 7 and so on...

they built those huge clocks WAAAY before industrial revolution

Without the sun, time wouldn't exist.
We measure time by the distance that the earth travels in relation to the sun...

^^^This was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title. Watched this a few months back

This !! was interesting. Did you know that when you look at the sun you are actually looking at a picture that happened like 8 minutes ago? It just takes 8 minutes for the sun light to travel all the way to the earth and into your cornea
