Alyssa Douglas is a 16-year-old Caucasian girl who might have just ruined her life. *She’s a hairdresser and a high schooler just trying to live a normal life, who will graduate in 2014. But from this day forward, her reputation, her chance at ever getting a job and her life have taken a twisted turn for the worst. Douglas decided to recklessly tweet something which is considered a threat to our national security, and she could be held liable for her actions in a court room or even in a jail cell.
What has gotten into our society for someone to tweet something so*venomous*and evil? What happened to just disagreeing with each other but always finding a way to compromise and build a stronger union? What happened to respecting the President of the United States no matter what color, party or gender he/she is?
The saddest part about this story is that this type of tweet probably didn’t just sprout out of nowhere. Charity begins at home. The way your parents raise you is the way you will go about living your life (most of the time). It’s sad that hate mongering like this from the older generation, who are supposed to be responsible role models, has influenced some kids of the younger generation such as Alyssa.
This incident teaches us two lessons:
1.*Watch what you tweet. Just because you may feel a certain way doesn’t mean it’s appropriate to tweet especially when it could hurt someone in a major way or even pose a threat to someone’s life such as this situation. Don’t tweet without thinking about the consequences of anything that you may say. Tweeting recklessly can end your life with one click of the button if you don’t watch out.
2.*Stop the hate. If our nation is ever going to recover from this economy mess, it’s going to have to be under a united front. No matter what political stance you support, it is unpatriotic and an injustice to the values our nation was built on if you don’t wish for the success of this nation because of who is in power. It is also a shame if you can’t disagree with someone without getting personal and irate.
A divided nation didn’t get us through Vietnam, Pearl Harbor, 9/11 and many other tragic events in our nation’s history and it won’t get us through this recession if we continue to spew hateful things at each other without coming up with positive solutions to help move us forward. Politicians have to stop the negative rhetoric because it’s starting to get into people’s heads like Alyssa, the Ft. Hood shooters and the shooter involved in the failed attempt to*assassinate*Gabby Giffords.

……the Secret Service is investigating the threat. The Clinton-Massie School District had a meeting with Douglas and her parents.
Bloggers and Twitter users followed the incident Friday with a discussion of hate speech.

One thing that's been lost amongst all of the politics is the respect for elected officials and the office they hold. The main thing I learned from the Bush presidency was that when you disrespect the president, you disrespect America. We lost so much respect as a nation and for each other during that era and it has opened the door for the environment that persists today.

The local news is reporting that she WON'T be charged.



I'm not sure why the story is being linked to Cincy because its really nowhere near the metro area. The only thing I know about that area is its very rural, conservative, and small so I can't honestly say I'm surprised that this would originate from that area.
