Sep 5 - 4 Marines accused of attacking Calif. man outside gay bar

Four Camp Pendleton Marines are accused of attacking a California man outside a gay bar in what police are investigating as a possible hate crime, according to reports from Long Beach.

A Marine Corps spokesman identified the four as Lance Cpl. Lewis Serna, Pfc. Thomas Pentek, Pfc. Sean Miller and Lance Cpl. John O'Leary, U-T San Diego reports. They were arrested about 2 a.m. Monday and accused of beating a film student into unconsciousness outside The Silver Fox in Long Beach. They were released on bail and returned to their units.

The victim, a film student from San Dimas, Calif., has not been identified. Two bystanders who came to his aid were also[..]aulted. Only one of the three was taken to the hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries, police told the Press-Telegram.

Police will present their case Thursday to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, a spokeswoman said.

Witnesses told police and media that the Marines entered the bar around closing time, then left.

"During the course of the[..]ault, the suspect/suspects used derogatory terms in regards to the victim's secksual orientation," said Joe Stilinovich, commander of the Long Beach Police Department's gang and violent crime division. "We're still trying to determine everyone's individual role in the[..]ault and to what extent each of them will be held culpable."

The victim, using crutches, told CBS affiliate KCAL-TV that one Marine "starts pushing me and calling me wimp." His face was not shown on camera.

A bar employee who came to the victim's aid said, "You just saw fists, and muscles, and tattoos, and all those guys were on top of him."

The Long Beach Post has details of the attack from a bartender who escaped harm.

In a statement, Marine Corps spokesman Maj. Manuel Delarosa said, "This is an isolated incident; committing any hate crime is unacceptable behavior and is not tolerated in the Marine Corps."
