Sep 26 - Mos Def Calls Out Artists Over ‘Jena Six’

Mos Def Calls Out Artists Over ‘Jena Six’
Tuesday, September 25, 2007
By: Kenny Rodriguez

Mos Def – who is currently in Louisiana rallying in support of the “Jena Six” students – expressed anger over the seemingly lack of response in the hip-hop community.

“Shame on everybody who’s not here,” the Brooklyn rapper told MTV News, referring to the Sept. 20th demonstration in Jena, Louisiana.

“I’m f*cking mad. I’m disappointed to always be coming to these things and it’s only one or two people [from the music industry here]. If you ain’t gonna use your voice, then be quiet. I’m disappointed and ashamed.”

Community leaders voiced outrage over the trial of six Black teenagers, who initially faced attempted-murder charges last year for the beating of a White student.

Bun B, of the rap duo UGK, also appeared at the rally after reportedly driving over from Port Arthur, Texas.

“I grew up right next to a town where it’s strictly White people,” Bun said.

“I’ve been privy to these small incidents of violence in these all-White towns. We were blessed to find out about the Jena Six and were blessed to try to make some type of impact in this community before things went too far.”

I see where he's coming from but what else are they protesting now?

If you beat someone up, you should be charged with assault. They were facing life for attempted murder but those charges were dropped. So again, what are they protesting now? That those young men are locked up for breaking the law????

I don't get it. Also, those fu*kers who hung the nooses should be dealt more serious charges.

The lack of support really is sad. Its sad how people that make just enough to survive will take off of work to rally, but celebs with money and strong influnce won't take the time to show up.

I'm down with Mos man..where's Russell Simmons? Puffy? Jay-Z? NAS!? Kanye? (Thought he cared about black people) sh*t..even Ice Cube showed and he aint had a legit album in years Salt (not Pepa) showed too!
What are they protesting? The fact that these kids been in jail since 06' for a damn fight!? The fact that white kids jumping black kids the same way result in simple assault, no jail time and probation...the fact that a white kid can pull a gun on a black kid, get the gun snatched from him and get the BLACK kid arrested for stealing the gun! The white kid that got his ass wooped was taunting the black kid who had just been jumped by a group of white kids at a party...AND called him a zzzzzz. Folks need to read the facts of the cases before they talk. NOBODY said they shouldn't be punished...the fight is for EQUAL punishment. The DA who brought attempted murder charges to begin with should be fu*kin fired! ATTEMPTED MURDER!? Not only can they not be charged with that crime based on their ages...they tried to say their "sneakers" were deadly weapons the ONLY reason the charges were dropeed is because of all the publicity......damn.

yoi man F*** rappers, I'm rolling with Oprah and Sharpton. these rappers don't do anything for black people but tear us down.

how is it that only a select few are voicing their feelings on things that are going on?

There acting like a bunch of uncle tom's they can come out and get on national TV the persuade us and white people to buy their album, but when it hits the fan where are they?
