Sep 23 - Senate Passes Resolution Insisting US Prevent Nuclear Iran

The US Senate on Saturday passed by a 90-1 vote a non-binding resolution insisting that the United States prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and ruling out any strategy aimed at dealing with a nuclear-armed Iran.

The only senator to vote against the resolution was Republican Rand Paul, a Tea Party and libertarian favorite, who argued that it was a de-facto declaration of war.

Paul had sponsored another measure that would suspend foreign aid to the governments of Pakistan, Egypt and Libya in response to recent attacks on US interests in these countries, but this was soundly defeated by a vote of 81-10.

Earlier Saturday, Western states defeated an Iranian proposal at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) annual[..]embly to amend their draft resolution on a policy area central to its work in preventing the spread of atom b0mbs.

The draft text was adopted in a vote shortly after midnight after days of closed-door negotiations failed to achieve the traditional consensus, with divisions between a small number of countries led by Iran and a much larger Western-dominated group.

Diplomats said Iran and Egypt had wanted to include language in the resolution suggesting the agency should have a role also in nuclear disarmament, apparently reflecting frustration on their part at the lack of faster progress on this issue.

This was opposed by a large majority including the United States, Britain, France and Russia - four officially recognized nuclear weapon states - which believe the IAEA is not the right forum for this, they said.

The West accuses Iran of trying to develop a nuclear weapons capability in secret. The Islamic Republic denies the charge.

Tehran often hits out at the United States over its atomic arsenal, and also criticizes Iran's arch foe, Israel, and that country's[..]umed nuclear weapons.

The annual General Conference of the 155 IAEA member states traditionally adopts several resolutions, setting out general and often vaguely worded policy aspirations and guidelines, during a week-long meeting in Vienna.

As in 2011, the most contentious issue was a text regarding the IAEA's activities in seeking to make sure nuclear material is not diverted for non-peaceful purposes, a crucial task for the UN agency under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

This has been brewing for A LONG TIME. They just essentially declared war on Iran, because Iran is not going to stop whatever they are doing (which they claim is only for nuclear power, and we accuse them of doing it to create weapons).

ya'll speak truth.. What i find very weird. This is a huge story and media's flying it under the radar... Look like the... OMG a war is coming starting to become a reality.... No wonder Iran making the strategic moves they are making. I wouldn't be surprised it they were attacked soon by Israel. Israel thinking they are still without nukes until Iran hits them with a nuke.

The same congress that is making Obama's job hard, that said they would do everything they could to prevent him from accomplishing goals. Nothing good will come of this. This situation will end up being like the WMD's from Iraq.

So congress, your congress just declared that they don't care about American lives...as several will be lost to protect Isreal....but we all know why Isreal is so important....all this hate for Muslims when it's the Jews who have done more !! to the world then any ever could have...

At the end of the day this is a pretty unforgivable thing if it does happen, because it absolutely doesn't need to, atleast not with America- but if it's gonna happen then I hope Iran, Russia and Japan are ready to become out 51st, 52nd and 53rd states [pic]

The senators will send Americans to die in a war of aggression, but won't take responsibility for the impending tragedies and loss of life by signing a declaration of war. Cowards.

I like that possibility.. But I doubt it would be a hostile approach. Our technology is too weak to pose a threat. [pic]

it always makes me laugh how before initiating an illegal war they still go through the legal channels even though by all logical standards what their gearing up to do is illegal....

i was thinking that too, that they might have a nuke on the low, and waiting for israel to try some !! and blast on them
