Sep 15 - 49 Years Ago: The 16th Street b0mbing R.I.P.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Forty-nine years ago today a b0mb exploded at Sixteenth Street Baptist Church k!lling four black girls, an act that shocked the nation and made the church holy ground in the fight for civil rights.

A crowd of over 400 blacks and whites marked the sad date Saturday at the church listening to words, music and the tolling of bells as the names of the four little girls were read aloud by church Pastor Rev. Arthur Price, Jr.

"What happened here 49 years ago we would call it an act of terrorism today. And, that's what indeed it was," said Price. "Just as our country vowed never to forget Sept. 11, 2001, let us vow never to forget a very real tragedy that happended on Sept. 15, 1963."

As Price read the names of each girl - Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, Cynthia Wesley - bells from the church rung out. Inside the church some in the crowd held hands and all bowed their heads.

Price told the crowd that the four girls, along with two young black boys k!lled that same day - Virgil Lamar Ware and Johnny Robinson - were like stunt men and women in a movie whose names are only shown on the credits as most people leave and who most never notice. Price said it's the stars of the film who get credit.

"There were many, many others with much more famous names, many marches, many politicians and others who today get much of the credit for the battles fought and the freedoms won but let us never forget these children and never forget the Lord," said Price.

Following the church service, wreaths were laid outside of the church on the side where the b0mb had gone off as the girls changed into their choir robes following Sunday school class.
