| By phantomnation - 09-14-2012, 09:19 AM - Boxden > BX Daily Bugle - news and headlines Just a quarter of eighth and 12th grade students in the United States have solid writing skills, even when allowed to use spell-check and other computer word processing tools. That's according to results from the 2011 National[..]essment of Educational Progress in writing released Friday. Twenty-four percent of students at each grade level were able to write essays that were well developed, organized and had proper language and grammar. Three percent scored as advanced. The remainder showed just partial mastery of these skills. Students were given the test by computer for the first time in the nearly four decades the test has been administered. Laptops were brought into public and private schools across the country to gain a nationally representative sample. The results weren't comparable to previous years. ![]() Source AP |

| It's because of this dumb!! "oh we can't have kids thinking they're dumb, everyone is great and can exceed at everything" bull!! attitude that schools push. When you have A LOT of kids graduating from High School who can't barely construct a sentence, you have a problem, yet nobody wants to hold these kids back or do anything to actually make them learn. I'm actually scared for this generation, imagine all these dumb!! kids running everything? Having doctors' who don't know basic math, Lawyers looking up laws on wikipedia and !!. | |

With that said, these new misguided educational standards are hitting our youth where it hurts most--in lower income neighborhoods. You cannot measure ones intellect on paper. That's why it's so important to have good teachers, they have to serve as gate keepers since they would know the students better than anyone else. They know how much help that kid needs in something and they know what that kid is proficient in. I'll never understand why teachers are only paid 40-100k when they play that big of a role in American life. | ||
