Nov 5 - UPS Worker Says He Was Fired For Not Delivering Pot

Sometimes a boss' orders can be a little too by-the-book, as a UPS driver who was fired for not delivering a package of marijuana found out this summer.

Former United Parcel Service driver Steven Mojica is suing the delivery company after he claims he was fired for not delivering a suspicious package that turned out to be marijuana, according to a Detroit Newsstory.

Mojica claims that a supervisor told him "he should have delivered the package, even if it contained illicit drugs."

Mojica, 41, had a next-day package from Arizona on July 29 to deliver in Pontiac, Mich. He held on to the four-pound package, which his supervisors considered theft and reported it to the DEA for suspected drug dealing, and fired him, according to his attorney, Mark Porter.

"It's nice to know UPS can guarantee delivery to drug dealers and fire employees that refuse to deliver their drugs," Porter told the Detroit News.

A UPS driver for 17 years, Mojica was worried he was in harm's way so he returned the package to his truck, according to the suit.

After being told by a supervisor to deliver it, even if it was illegal drugs, Mojica opened it and found what he thought was marijuana.

UPS had no comment to the Detroit News on the firing or lawsuit, but said that drivers can contact their local operations office if they are suspicious of the contents of packages they're delivering.

good, thats what happens when you do illegal stuff on your job. he has no right to screen packages as he's just a delivery man. i applaud ups for this, and not just because i got banned tryna plan scams, moving grams on panam's to san fran. actually Canada Post to Oakville

its crazy because i work for UPS, and believe me, we can't even send tobacco thru our system, so what was wrong with the driver denying delivering the package? Drivers are union positions so he shouldn't have gotten fired just like that anyway

If he was fired that easily, then truck drivers are not in the Union. Only the package handlers are Union workers to my knowledge but I could be wrong.

Anyway, all he had to do was deliver the package. There was no need for him to play detective, so he got what he deserved and got fired.

you are %100 completely wrong my good friend. drivers and package handlers are both union. supervisors and bosses are not. once you go from union to supervisor you cant go back. ive turned down supervisor jobs for this reason only. thats from 3 1/2 years experience at UPS.

Something is wrong here. Maybe he's been written up too many times but I find it odd that this guy didn't get a shop stuart or get the union on the case to fight on his behalf.

He should have delivered the package, his job is to deliver packages, not to determine what's inside and if it is illegal or not.
