		Reports: New drug ‘oxi’ terrifies Brazil “Oxi,” short for oxidado is a new cocaine-derived and highly addictive drug that is showing up in Brazil at alarming rates, many reports are saying. The drug is five times cheaper than crack cocaine: The Rio Times is reporting: It looks like crack, but it is much cheaper, four times more lethal and called “oxi” or “oxidado” (rust). It’s a cocaine derivative, just like crack, but it contains kerosene or gasoline, acetone, battery fluid and other chemicals. … Oxi is known as ‘the drug of [rip]’ because it’s extremely harmful to the body and addictive right after the first try. “You use oxi once, and you want to use it two, five, ten, twenty times,” a 25-year-old oxi-addict told Brazilian TV. Users take on a yellowish skin color, lose weight very quickly and develop liver problems. They start to look like emaciated living corpses in just a few weeks time. The drug causes stomach aches, vomiting and constant diarrhea, but perhaps the most alarming fact is that most users die within a year. In Sao Paulo, where the number of crack addicts grows at alarming levels, police found 5,000 of oxi rocks in the Heliopolis slum, the largest amount of the drug ever seized in the country. Officers also seized 6 tons of cocaine paste, which would be used to produce oxi, on Tuesday (May 17). Director of a drugs research centre of Rio de Janeiro State University, Ivone Ponczek, said that oxi was more dangerous than crack because it was easier to be produced. “While crack needs a mixture of sodium bicarbonate and others, and still needs a little know-how to be done, oxi can be handmade, can be made by anyone,” she said.

I've never really understood the appeal of drugs THAT dangerous. I can see someone smoking weed, drinking, even snorting a little powder (all those are dangerous enough); but I never understood what would make someone even want do something like this. But on the other hand, I guess if they are already hooked on powder cocaine and they graduate to crack, then this would only be a step up from that. Damn, they die within a year, and it's cheaper thank crack! This would blow through America very fast.

certain chemicals can actually make the drug expand when changed from it's pasty form to it's rocky form. It's all in the processing. Not to mention that the "80-90% purity" can be referring to the actual cocain contained in said drug. I would have to see the process to be sure, but it sounds to me that it's that cheap because it's so easy to process. Crack is cheap because you can turn a little bit of powder into a large amount of the rocked form of the drug, and it's very easy to do so. Adding water and heat to certain substances can change the size, weight, and/or chemical makeup of certains substances.
