Jun 18 - Chicago Shootings: Teen Among At Least 7 k#lled, 35 Wounded By Weekend Gun Violence

A teenage girl is among at least 7 k#lled and 35 hurt in shootings between Friday evening and early Monday morning in Chicago, as gun violence failed to relent amidst a rare visit from the First Family.

Shakaki Asphy, 16, was sitting on the porch of a vacant home in the city's West Englewood neighborhood around 7 p.m. Saturday when a shooter wearing a grey hoodie opened fire, ABC Chicago reports.

Shakaki died shortly after the shooting at a hospital. A second teen -- Leon Cunningham, 18 -- was wounded in the same shooting. Cunningham was paralyzed by a shooting while sitting on the porch of his own nearby home a few years before, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. He was in his wheelchair at the time of the Saturday shooting.

"It’s crazy," Della Cunningham, Leon's mother, told the Sun-Times. "An innocent girl got shot and my son got shot again -- for no reason."

The shooting took place on the same block where, in 2006, 10-year-old Siretha White was fatally shot while celebrating her surprise birthday party on a porch, according to CBS Chicago.

Tiffany Edwards, 25, was also among those fatally shot over the weekend in Chicago. She was riding in the front pa#senger seat of a van in the 7600 block of South State Street early Sunday when a shooter opened fire, according to ABC. (Scroll down for more on Edwards' shooting [rip].)

The 7 k#lled and 35 hurt in weekend shootings of a weekend that saw 8 k#lled and at some 46 wounded by gun violence in Chicago. Three people were k#lled and 29 wounded in shootings during the weekend prior to that. The city's homicide rate is up more than 50 percent over last year.

Putting the shootings into chilling context, more Chicago residents have been victims of homicide so far this year than the number of U.S. troops k#lled in Afghanistan.

The weekend marked the first opportunity for Chicago police to take part in a new initiative allowing them to receive overtime pay for working on their days off, a program that aims to reduce gun violence. NBC Chicago reports that less than 60 officers have signed up so far.

Michael Shields, Fraternal Order of Police president, said to the station that the initiative won't be able to offset the challenges presented by the Chicago Police Department being short-staffed:

Chicago police officers can't be everywhere. Because they're racing from one 911 call to the next, and with manpower as it is right now, it's very difficult to deter crime.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy appeared on several local news stations last week to discuss the uptick in fatal shootings in the city and pointed out that while "none of it is OK," overall crime in the city is down 10 percent. He said last Tuesday that the city was dealing with a "perception problem" when it comes to its homicide and shooting rates, the Chicago Tribune reported.

There's been gangs here since the 1800's, so gangs WILL ALWAYS FACTOR into Chicago. This is not as bad as the 90's when we had 900 murks a year. But the problems going on now in the city are largely down to the fact that so many of the gang leaders have been locked up since the 90's and the new generation is emerging out of that chaos. The structure isnt the same anymore, the young boys are still GD, BPS, CVL, TVL, UVL, BD, like always but they've brought block crews into the fold.

So you got kids running around f!ghting over petty block stuff like money, pride, respect etc. Some of the beefs out here are ridiculous. Like around 63rd street one of the young boys around there named Dum Dum got blasted last week off 61st & Rockwell right on his porch by dudes from his own nation (GDN) from a different crews down the way. Then a few days later, a dude from Markham got lit up on 63rd. Why did these two murks happen? All over two crews named A Block and Hit Squad from the same damn nation beefing. And guess why they are beefing? My guy told me it started over a f!ght that happened at a !!ing basketball game. So !! like that goes to show you some of the mentality of some of these young boys out here.

Trust me bruh, the people offline in the hoods DO BE CARING. I cant speak for BX, but if you ever go to a block here in the CHI in person where someone has recently been shoot or k#lled and personally talk to people out there you can tell they're concerned. Sometimes when you go to the danger zones, you can feel the tension in the air. Even my friends say the same thing, that they can feel it in the air. And it's not a good feeling at all.

You'd think something like this would get more national attention, but like I said, if it's not race-related then people generally don't publicize the !! out of it and keep feeding it.

This !! is senseless, bring in the national guard and lock these neighborhoods down, i really honestly dont think the good residents will mind as long as their safe

im from the chi and this situation is deeper than just blacks k#lling blacks its about taking back the city the city officials knew what was going to happen 20 years ago when they locked up all the top leaders and 12 years ago when they started knocking down the projects
i knew what was going to happen
its alot of politics in play that if your not from the chi and dont know how the politics work in city hall and the streets you just will not understand

i never condoned it but to say the life lost itself didnt matter, but only the reason behind it is .....man its just pitiful that so many ppl think this way.
