Jul 28 - Congregation denies church's use for black couple's wedding
By Jesszman - 07-28-2012, 02:00 PM - Boxden > BX Daily Bugle - news and headlines

CRYSTAL SPRINGS, Miss. -- It was to be their big day, but a Jackson couple says the church where they were planning to wed turned them away because of race.

Now, the couple wants answers, and the church's pastor is questioning the mindset of some of members of his congregation who caused the problem in the first place.

They had set the date and printed and mailed out all the invitations, but the day before wedding bells were to ring for Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson, they say they got some bad news from the pastor.

"The church congregation had decided no black could be married at that church, and that if he went on to marry her, then they would vote him out the church," said Charles Wilson.

The Wilsons were trying to get married at the predominantly white First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs -- a church they attend regularly, but are not members of.

"He had people in the sanctuary that were pitching a fit about us being a black couple," said Te'Andrea Wilson. "I didn't like it at all, because I wasn't brought up to be racist. I was brought up to love and care for everybody."

The church's pastor, Dr. Stan Weatherford, says he was taken by surprise by what he calls a small minority against the black marriage at the church.

"This had never been done before here, so it was setting a new precedent, and there are those who reacted to that because of that," said Weatherford.

Weatherford performed the wedding at a nearby church.

"I didn't want to have a controversy within the church, and I didn't want a controversy to affect the wedding of Charles and Te' Andrea. I wanted to make sure their wedding day was a special day," said Weatherford.

After months of planning, the newlyweds say they had no choice but to go through with the wedding at the new location, but they still can't understand why a church would ban their wedding because of race.

"I blame the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, I blame those members who knew and call themselves Christians and didn't stand up," said Charles Wilson.

Church officials say they welcome any race into their congregation.
They now plan to hold internal meetings on how to move forward, should this situation occur again.

"I was prepared to go ahead and do the wedding here just like it was planned, and just like we agreed to," said Weatherford. "I was just looking for an opportunity to be able to address a need within our congregation and at the same time minister to them."

If a church can deny a homose#ual couple getting married there, is this wrong?

I'm not understanding the question. The bible says homose#uality is a sin are you asking if the bible says being black is a sin?

I think he's wondering if people(mainly Blacks) who said the Church can deny Homose#ual couple weddings are also ok w/the Church denying other couples due to Race.

Prejudice is prejudice no matter how you look at it. If people took the time to understand how homose#uality occurs and how an in-depth analysis of it should be taken more seriously than the Bible's "it's a sin" description, then changes could be made. I don't, however, think the plight of minorities(especially black people) should be repeatedly compared to that of gays. Since this instance involves marriage, I'll cut it some slack but this story is really about an ongoing racism that still lies within many ignorant Americans.

there scripture that says wimps should die on sight, show me a scripture where it says brown skin isn't allowed in the congregation. The bible is the standard their organization is adhering to so you can't force everyone to condone or accept homose#uality and then try to label them as some kind of "ignorant hater" or "homophobe" if they don't. Get over it already no one is oppressing homose#uals, if they don't like the rules of the bible then they need to find another religion instead of trying to change one to fit their own lifestyles.

The Bible also spoke of the Curse of Ham which some thought it meant that Black skin was a result of that curse and doomed to be Slaves[pic]

The Old Testament has plenty of ridiculous rules and stories, so why is Homose#uality the one that everyone wants to follow?

Genesis 9:25
And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren
The curse of Ham in the Old Testament was that Canaan would serve Shem, it had nothing to do with skin color. What you're talking about is a doctrine that comes from the Mormon Church and the book they created.

This is why its hard to have an intelligent discussion about the bible, people talk about it and have their opinions made up about things they haven't even read, so how could you ever expect to understand it?

The significance of homose#uality is because there is a specific commandment against the action. No church is supposed to wed 2 homose#uals, 2 people committing adultery and non believers. Homose#uality is not being singled out exclusively by scripture, its the people who are getting so offended about it that are singling it out and acting like the people are out to oppress gays. If you don't like it don't be a christian and keep it moving i don't see why you're so bent out of shape about people choosing to not condone homose#uality.=

IIRC, many traced the descendents of Ham down to many of the African people, and Ham is considered the "Father of Black People" in biblical canon()

As for Gays getting married. I honestly don't give a !! if the Church doesn't want to marry them, b/c they can always get married @ a courthouse. What I DO have a problem w/is folks using the Church to deny them that right to get married.

Use common sensE, if hams son was black then obviously Noah and his sons were black since they were the only people left. You can quote random sources all you want , NOWHERE in the bible does it say black skin is a curse. There are dark asians and dark middle easterners. Also i have a zondervan bible dictionary and it says specifically that ham was the foreefather of the africans and not the negroes. Dare me to prove it or do u believe jesus is white with blonde hair and blue eyes [pic]

Many claim that Ham's skin became blackened due to the curse[pic]

In all honesty, I was just simply using an example of how the Bible/Church is used for some BS things.

Only a fool speaks what he HEARS instead of what he KNOWS and im not trying to offend you but if you're going to have an opinion on something at least let it be based up on facts and not what someone told you and you ran with it.

The Bible was used to enslave black people and exterminate the native americans, but that had nothing to do with the bible and everything to do with the peoples who's hands it was in and the fact that most the american population get their information from hearsay instead of doing their own research. Like if you would have checked up on that Curse of Ham in the bible when you heard about it you would have found out it was bullshyt, but since you decided to be a gullible sheep you're repeating lies that someone made up revealing your lack of critical thinking.

Well im trying to get you to understand that Christianity is SUPPOSED to be an organization that is regulated and ruled by the commandments in the bible so there are things that are not going to be accepted. There are rules in any group and if you don't like them then you don't participate, but you can't ridicule people for their beliefs and then try to force them to think the way you do just because YOU feel a certain way. If you want people to respect your choice to not have an issue with homose#uality then you need to respect other peoples choices not to condone it. They don't let you smoke weed or listen to Rick Ross in church either but no one is blowing it up as if its some form of oppression.

People complain about what the "church" makes people believe but they're the same ones trying to force down your throat the acceptance of homose#uals. Hypocrisy

Being Gay is a se#ual preference something you yourself choose to engage in.. Being Black or any color is something created through genetic coding something you have no control over. No one can choose to be a color. Being Black isnt a lifestyle people choose your born a color and you have zero control over your skin color. But you have absolute and complete control over who you have se# with.
