RALEIGH, N.C. -- Police in North Carolina have arrested the husband of a $1 million lottery winner, accusing him of obtaining the ticket illegally.

Authorities said Wednesday that Sean Mewherter of Wilmington is charged with larceny by employee and possession of stolen goods over $100,000. The charges were announced by the N.C. Education Lottery.

A statement from lottery officials said the charges resulted from an investigation into a $1 million prize awarded to Mewherter's wife, Mikala Fields. She received the prize on July 2 after presenting the winning ticket at lottery headquarters. She has not been charged.

Lottery officials said that after the award was announced, they were contacted by Mewherter's employer, Kangaroo Express in Oak Island, where he allegedly obtained the ticket. An investigation led to the charges and his arrest by police there.

Lottery officials want to recover the $408,003 paid to Fields after she took a lump-sum payment.

It happens more often than you think but they got greedy
The clerks usually have a person unrelated turn in the winning ticket to throw suspicions off. You walk in with the winning lotto ticket and ask to have the numbers checked. You think you hear music, but the clerk is banging on the lower the volume key. She or he turns the display away from you so you can not see that you are a winner. Then she gives you the bad news, (you are not a winner). She will start to hand you the ticket, but asks you if you want it. You tell her to trash it and you see her throw it into the trash can. But as soon as you leave the store, it does not stay there very long. They contact a friend who claims to be the winner, and they split the money. This happens again and again. In order to stop it, and give ordinary people a chance to win the lotto. A picture should be taken, or a driver's license photo inputted on the ticket itself. People continue to steal millions of dollars from unsuspecting lotto players. And because it is a bear instrument, which you failed to sign in ink, you never get your winnings. On top of that you not allowed to buy lottery tickets from where you work.

If you not checking your own #'s you tripping.

The amount of money being paid out through Lottories is astronomical nowadays. I check my own Mega millions Powerball #'s either online or asking the clerk for a printout of the drawing #'s, never do I give it to them...if I buy an instant win I double and triple check them !!s. I remember 1 time I had a $500 instant win scratch off that I thought was a loser so I just threw it on my dresser to be thrown away later...happened to be cleaning up and out of the corner of my eye I saw the symbol that meant instant win [pic] couldn't believe I missed it the first time. nicca smoked good that week [pic]
