The University of Arizona recently announced that it has created a “Hip-Hop Concentration” in the College of Humanities’ minor for Africana Studies, reportedly the first of its kind for the institution.

According to the description of the minor and its objectives, the University of Arizona seeks to ”provide students with a solid introduction and broad understanding of the origins and developing of the forms of expression that make up Hip-Hop cultures throughout the world: Hip-Hop dance, rap music, graffiti/tagging, fashion, business, and film. The Minor introduces students to the main themes represented in Hip-Hop cultures: appropriation and defense of spaces, mixing of different cultures, migrations, multilingualism, race, cl a$s, gender, religions, secksuality, nationality, politics and the economy, and, the search for identity.”

“The UA is more open to new, challenging, ambitious, creative and even controversial topics than almost any other university in the world,” Alain-Philippe Durand, director of Africana Studies at the University of Arizona explained. “Here, you are not told to stay in your corner. It is the opposite: You are constantly pushed and encouraged to break boundaries.””

Courses for the minor include Rap, Culture and God, Hip-Hop Cinema, US & Francophone Hip-Hop Cultures, Blacks in Hollywood, Pan-African Dance Aesthetics and a host of other cl a$ses geared towards African-American studies and African-American History.

Ultimately the course seeks to give students the opportunity to investigate Hip-Hop’s cultural impact, which the University of Arizona acknowledges “severely impacted many elements of mainstream American culture to the extent that corporations have embraced hip-hop music and artists as a means of marketing goods to everyone.”

have any one of yall ever went to college?? They have studies on jazz and rock, so why not hip-hop. This is a big step for making the skeptics who dont like hip-hop finally respect it as music. And it will help people outside of the black race understand our culture. Hopefully one day it will get to the point of jazz and rock studies.

Im pretty sure McNally Smith college of Music in Minneapolis offers a degree in Hip hop studies.

But they are one of the best schools in the nation for music and performance arts. Plus they also have actual hip hop artist that teach cl a$ses like Dessa and Toki Wright

Y'all saying it like it couldn't help you out here in the work force. Like it's not a hip hop industry , or a music industry. It all depends on the person and how they work their degree, and what they learned in school.

im not trashing it overall, but minoring in it? i can see courses. but a minor?

it depends on your overall situation though, i should have clarified that. im just thinking its hard even to get a job out here as it is, then to be minoring in things that cant help you find work. but again that depends on a person's overall situation

If someones about that Hip Hop like that and the culture and has some drive that most people who strive to have some sort of success have... I don't see why that person wouldnt take his/her education there. Not talking about you in particular, but I just get this bug up my[..] when people wanna call themselves trashing Hip Hop. Hip Hop is all around this muthafuhka. Its not "impossible" to find a career in it other than rapper. Sheeeit, I can't count how many times my boss comes to us with some "this company wants a little Hip Hop urban flair to this ad" be car dealerships, restaraunts, etc. Regardless how people feel about the !! or the quality of artists out now theres still a huge fascination people have with Hip Hop & everything that has to do with it.
