Jan 27 - Stamp Price Increase Starts Today 1/27/2013

Get ready to shell out another penny per stamp in 2013 — U.S. Postal Service prices are on the rise.

Effective January 27, the price of a first-class Forever stamp will increase by one cent to 46 cents, with postcard postage also rising by a penny as well, to 33 cents.

Customers can stock up on the 45-cent Forever stamps, which will continue to be accepted, in the weeks prior to the rate change.

Letters to foreign countries will also get more expensive, with postage increasing to $1.10. Right now, mailing a letter to Canada or Mexico costs 85 cents, while letters to other international addresses cost $1.05.

Overall, postage prices will jump by 4 percent for mailing and shipping services. The increase for priority mail prices will be steeper, with prices increasing by 6.3 percent.

The higher prices are part of the cash-strapped Postal Service’s efforts to right itself financially. In a statement released Thursday, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said the Postal Service is “on an unsustainable financial path.”

“We are currently losing $25 million per day,” Donahoe said. “We have defaulted on $11.1 billion in Treasury payments and exhausted our borrowing authority.”

Donahoe called on the newly sworn-in Congress to pass proposed postal legislation that “could quickly restore the Postal Service to profitability and put the organization on a st@ble, long-term financial footing.” The last Congress adjourned without passing such legislation, Donahoe noted.

They need to re-haul their business practices and get new management, yes no one uses their services a lot anymore but if this service goes completely private we'll see monitoring and ridiculous prices

email k!lled them. There's no real use for them. I don't even check my regular mail daily anymore because it's just junk mail and Eastbay which to me is more junk mail.

USPS is better to ship packages than UPS or FEDX. It's almost always cheaper, always faster and they deliver on Saturday.

Yeah but their tracking system...if you want to call it that !!ing sucks. If its something little I will use USPS but if its a bigger or a more high value package I use UPS.

IDK if it's just a coincidence, but every post office I've ever went to is infested with old, slow people working there.

If they're so desperate to recoup some money, maybe they should start by forcing retirements. Raise your performance standards and start offering incentives to retire. They'll take it.

Bring some young people in on lower wages and stop raising prices for your mediocre service.

tracking sucks and they leave !! on the porch every time if someone doesn't answer in the first 3 seconds. fedex sucks too. that leaves the Feds that are still[..] as the better choice

I do the same bruh.. its like are they really gonna check every !!ing envelop and stop to send it back to sender over $0.5 - $0.10, hell no.. thats prolly why they got them $0.45 forever stamps and have a lil fund to put to the side and cover us non conforming !!s..lol

yea, this did boggle my mind. i'm wondering why they are so broke. it's prolly the pensions too. that whole concept of well, i worked somewhere for 20 years, i'd going to stop working there now and still get half what my salary was for the rest of my life, is just !!ing retarded if you ask me. find something else to do and put that money back into the company. what someone else stated is probably going to happen....some private company will buy them out and bring about a bunch of changes and new laws, as usual. mail is still useful but the internet did k!ll the !! outta their business. and that !! is not accurate like that. i keep hearing about packages taking forever to get to their destination. 2 to 3 days my !!ing[..]. more like 2 to 3 weeks for priority mail.
