OLD BRIDGE — Terence Tyler went on a break from his overnight shift at the Old Bridge Pathmark a little after 3 this morning. When he returned to the store on Route 9 about 20 minutes later, he was wearing desert camouflage clothing and clutching an[..]ault rifle, authorities said.
From the parking lot, he took aim and fired one shot, missing a male employee standing outside. That employee ran inside and warned his 12 co-workers to take cover, authorities said. It would prove insufficient warning for two young township residents.
Tyler, 23, who was discharged from the Marines in February 2010, was now inside. He stopped at one aisle, and fired 16 times at five employees, striking and k!lling Cristina LoBrutto, 18, and Bryan Breen, 24, Middlesecks County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said.
"I believe everyone was targeted,” Kaplan said this morning.
Ten other employees scattered through a back door and were uninjured, Kaplan said.
Tyler, who had worked at the store since Aug. 20, then drew a .45 caliber handgun, and k!lled himself, the prosecutor said.
Tyler had moved to Old Bridge in June. Originally from Brooklyn, he joined the Corps in March 2008. He never saw combat or traveled overseas.

Besides his victims, Tyler left behind a staccato history of anger and hate.
Using the online handle "Tylerbkstyle," Tyler posted more than 2,000 tweets in 2009 during a stint with the Marines that lasted just less than two years.
Many reflected a strong and profane dislike of the Marines, his unhappiness in Twentynine Palms, Calif., home of the Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command, where he was stationed, and his longing to return to New York City.
"...is it normal to want to k!ll ALL of ur coworkers? Maybe but I'm actually in a position where I can," he tweeted on June 1, 2009, adding the acronym "smh," which means "shaking my head" in internet jargon.
Three days later, he tweeted, "Grrrr I hope these plp enjoy being annoying cuz whn we deploy they'll all die anyway."
LoBrutto was a June graduate of Old Bridge High School. Timothy Brennan, the district's interim superintendent, described her as a bright student, active as a horn player in the music department.
Breen, who lived in the Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge, graduated from Old Bridge High School in 2006.
Students and former students were organizing a vigil for 7:45 tonight, Brennan said.
Two busloads of band members were on their way home from camp this afternoon. They were being sent to an undisclosed location to meet with grief counselors. A concert planned for 6 p.m. has been postponed, Brennan said.
Miranda Hernandez, 19, was scheduled to work the morning shift at Pathmark today. But after she got another job, LoBrutto took her shift.
This morning, at the nearby London Terrace Apartment complex, Hernandez was shaken.
“What keeps coming into my mind is that it could have been me,” she said.
Hernandez said she knew both victims and had met the shooter, who only began working at the supermarket earlier this month.

Right away, she said Tyler made her uneasy.

“The way he looked at me, that gave me a very bad feeling,” she said. “He gave me an uneasy vibe.”
Dragan Jovanovic, general manager of the Staples store next to Pathmark, couldn’t get into the parking lot when he arrived about 7 a.m. and went into the nearby McDonald's. There, he found a shaken Pathmark employee who described the beginning of the rampage and how he escaped the shooter.
The employee told Jovanovic the gunman threw a shopping cart through a front store window, then started shooting.
“He heard a ‘loud bang,’ then he ran out the back door,” Jovanovic said the employee told him. “He knew all the employees, he knew the shooter, he knew all the people that got k!lled.”
Terence S. Tyler served less than two years in the military, said Capt. Kendra Motz, a Marine spokeswoman.
His home was Brooklyn when he entered the Marines on March 24, 2008. His specialty classification in the Marines was “0311 - Rifleman” — or the general infantry, Motz said. He received the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal, he said.
Tyler was discharged Feb. 27, 2010. The Marines do not comment on whether personnel are honorable or dishonorably discharged, Motz said.
For the past month,Tyler had been living with his sister in the sprawling London Terrace complex, which is directly behind the Pathmark.
This morning, Breen's family gathered in the backyard of their home consoling one another.
June Launay lives next door to the Breen family and her son graduated from Old Bridge High with Bryan.
"He was a really nice kid. He's always been polite. He's always been friendly and outgoing," Launay said, fighting back tears. "He's just a normal kid. He wasn't a kid you ever worried about. We're all shaken up over here."
Old Bridge police parked a patrol car several houses away from LoBrutto's home. They asked reporters to stay back at the family's request.
Two women stood nearby, hugging and consoling each other before quickly getting into cars and drove away.
A neighbor who declined to give her name said she last saw LoBrutto three days ago washing her brand new car, a Nissan. The recent high school graduate was college-bound, although it wasn't clear where. She got the job and was "just looking to pay for some girlie things."
"She was very friendly, very family oriented," said the neighbor, who used to babysit the victim and her younger sister. "She had a lot of friends."

Eugene Donofrio is both the Old Bridge Board of Education President and a family friend of Cristina Lo Brutto through his daughter. Lo Brutto was k!lled while working early Friday morning when a disgruntled Pathmark employee opened fire. The employee, Terence Tyler, k!lled two employees before turning the gun on himself.
