Aug 19 - GM recalls 250,000 SUVs for fire hazard

(CNN) -- General Motors is recalling nearly 250,000 sport utility vehicles because of an electrical problem that can cause fires.

The recall pertains to some 2006 and 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazers, GMC Envoys, Buick Raniers, the SAAB 9-7x, and Isuzu Ascenders, sold in a number of northern states, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In these vehicles, fluid may enter the driver's door module, causing corrosion that can lead to a short-circuit.

"A short may cause the power door lock and power window switches to function intermittently or become inoperative. The short may also cause overheating, which could melt components of the door module, producing odor, smoke, or a fire," the recall states.

GM reported that at least 28 vehicle door fires were reported in connection with the problem.

The recall includes a total of 249,260 vehicles that were sold in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

A solution to the problem is still being finalized, according to the recall. Owners will be notified if their vehicle is included in the recall by the respective car makers.

So, we're just going to ignore this:

DETROIT — After three years of settling for second place, General Motors reclaimed its title as the world’s largest automaker in 2011, a year when its sales grew in every region of the globe while Toyota sales were hampered by major natural disasters.
Publicly at least, G.M. executives have been careful to avoid celebrating amid Toyota’s struggles. Toyota only recently was able to return production to normal levels after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan last March caused major disruptions and parts shortages.
And this:

G.M. shares rose 31 cents Thursday, to $24.82. They have risen 22 percent so far this month but remain well below the $33 price from G.M.’s initial public offering in November 2010. The Treasury Department, which still owns about 26 percent of G.M., needs the shares to reach roughly $54 to recoup its full investment in the company.

G.M., whose sales figures include its joint ventures in China, will need to continue increasing its sales to stay on top in the years ahead, if Toyota and Volkswagen are able to meet their ambitious forecasts. Toyota last month said it was aiming to sell 8.48 million vehicles in 2012 and nearly 9 million in 2013, not including some affiliate companies that are included in last year’s 7.9 million figure. Volkswagen is setting a target of 10 million in annual sales by 2018.

$GM also lost $700+ million in operating expenses because of the slowdown on Europe.

General Motors Company (GM) said in an e-mailed statement on Thursday that the company's German unit Opel is negotiating with workers at its main Ruesselsheim plant to shorten their working hours due to softer demand for cars in Europe. General Motors lost US$747 million on its European operations last year as a weak economy hit car sales in the region, forcing carmakers to confront high fixed costs and excess production capacity that GM has said equates to 10 plants.
