Holograms could soon replace airport workers

Meet AVA — the airport virtual[..]istant stands ready to help you out in Newark and La Guardia airports, and soon JFK. This virtual guide, also called a hologram virtual[..]istant, is created by projecting onto a six-foot-tall human-shaped piece of plexiglass.

At the moment, she's only an information kiosk that spouts a prerecorded message when approached by a user — but according to her creators, airportone.com, she will soon have voice-recognition and the ability to answer your questions. She will also be multilingual, to[..]ist international travelers.

Right now the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are conducting a six-month trial with these virtual[..]istants. The public reactions have been mixed. Some like the novelty and others are weirded out by the way her eyes that seem to follow them around the room When idle, AVA is programmed to fiddle and look about in different directions.

The developers have aspirations broader then just airport kiosks. Their website features different models, for use in hospitals, business offices, stores and museums. Soon interactive holograms might become part of our everyday life. While airportone's promotional material reads like the creepy set-up for any "technology gone rogue" plot, it does make a strong point:

She works 24 hours a day, seven days a week and doesn't charge for overtime. She never gets sick and doesn't require a background check.

At least she isn't armed and mobile. Yet.

this actually helps companies save money, instead of paying us slaves to do the work they can have holograms doing it for free, rich get richer, only thing the have to worry about is maintenance upkeep

I know mad people who work in Airports, hell I know 3 or 4 people on this forum alone who make 35K+ a year and they're under the age of 26 working in Airports....they'll be broke and job-less if this happens.

I have my own business which affords me a lifestyle I myself have admitted is a bit 'lucky'....So the loss in jobs wont hurt me one bit. Wouldn't happen for a variety of reasons...Airports are unionized...so you can bet unions will have a say in who creates these things and also...it doesn't matter where you manufacture the product the company has to be based in the United States. Also, Japan doesn't pay people horrible wages. Japan is a lot different than China. In fact having things produced in Japan is very expensive as they make quality products. You aren't as smart as you think.

And please don't act like you own a legit business. You sell pot growing supplies or something so stop it.
