The innovation, which bears a pa#sing resemblance to the futuristic hologram data screens used by Tom Cruise in the science fiction film Minority Report, will allow police to quickly collate and visualise vast amounts of data from cameras, licence plate readers, 911 calls, police databases and other sources. It will then display the information in real time, both visually and chronologically, allowing investigators to centralise information about crimes as they happen or are reported. "It is a one-stop shop for law enforcement," Bloomberg said at a City Hall press conference unveiling the new technology. But, though it has many screens, maps, and flashing visuals that make it look like science fiction, the new technology has a distinctly un-Hollywood name: the Domain Awareness System. Developed by Microsoft engineers working with New York police officers, DAS will allow a host of activities to be carried out, such as spotting a suspicious vehicle and being able to track its recent movements or use cameras to track back and see who left a suspicious package. It features live video feeds, huge databases of recent crime patterns and can take input direct from the field in real time via things like 911 calls or police radios. "All the information is presented visually and geographically and in chronological context," said police commissioner Ray Kelly. But there is more to the new system than just f!ghting crime in a city that has in recent decades shed a once fearsome reputation to become one of the safest big metropolitan areas in America. Part of the deal with Microsoft will result in the city of New York taking a 30% cut on any profits that the computer firm gets from selling the technology to other cities in America or around the world. "Maybe we can make a few bucks," Bloomberg said. "It is a great example of what the public and private sector can do to improve people's lives when we work together." Such partnerships with the private sector, especially in sensitive areas like law enforcement, are not without their critics who are concerned about introducing a profit motive into the traditional domain of public social policy. But they are becoming a Bloomberg specialism. He recently announced an agreement with investment bank Goldman Sachs to issue a loan, called a "social impact bond", that will fund a scheme to cut re-offending rates among young people leaving New York's notorious Rikers Island jail. If the scheme beats certain targets of youth behaviour Goldman could make several million dollars of profit. Commissioner Ray Kelly says system is able to access information through live video feeds and allow cops to get reading on radioactive substances By Rocco Parascandola And Tina Moore [pic] The NYPD is starting to look like a flashy, forensic crime TV show thanks to a new super computer system unveiled Wednesday near Wall St. The Domain Awareness System designed by the NYPD and Microsoft Corp. uses data from a network of cameras, radiation detectors, license plate readers and crime reports, officials said. “We’re not your mom and pop police department anymore,” Mayor Bloomberg crowed. “We are in the next century. We are leading the pack.” The system, which cost somewhere between $30 and $40 million to develop, could also help pay for itself with the city expecting to earn 30% of the profits on Microsoft sales to other city’s and countries, Bloomberg said. The joint venture began when the NYPD approached Microsoft about the effort, officials said. Cops were involved with the programmers throughout the process, earning the city its cut of the proceeds. Officials declined to predict how much the city’s share of the system could be worth. “For years, we’ve been stovepiped as far as databases are concerned,” NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. “Now, everything that we have about an incident, an event, an individual comes together on that workbench, so it’s one-stop shopping for investigators.” [pic] Using the new system, investigators will be able to access information through live video feeds and could potentially see who left a suspicious package behind just moments later, Kelly said. The system will also allow cops to get a reading on radioactive substances, and determine if it is naturally occurring, some kind of weapon or a harmless isotope used in medical treatments. “We can track where a car[..]ociated with a murk suspect is currently located and where it’s been over the past several days, weeks or months,” Kelly said. “This is a system developed by police officers for police officers.” The system will also check license plate numbers to a watch list and alert investigators if a match is detected and quickly pull up crime reports, arrests and warrants on a suspect. The system has some civil liberties advocates warning of Big Brother type surveillance. “We fully support the police using technology to combat crime and terrorism, but law-abiding New Yorkers should not end up in a police database every time they walk their dog, go to the doctor, or drive around Manhattan,” said New York Civil Liberties Union[..]ociate Legal Director Chris Dunn. | [pic][pic][pic] have a little bit of a mixed reaction with this..... this type of system is sooooo advanced that it could possibly cripple crime (in the long-run) in Manhattan!! only thing I'm skeptical about is someone having the genius idea of taking this type of technology further & implementing it in ways that affect peoples Privacy... | |

| Yeah this type of technology is a double-edged sword. It could probably stop a lot of crime, but at the same time, it's going to invade the privacy of hundreds of thousands of innocent individuals. There has to be a balance here. Hopefully they are discussing this balance plan in great detail before full implementation, but I am very skeptical. | |

| Bloomberg is a tyrant hands down... Lemmi do a quick run down... Stop and frisk 80% black/male latino of thousands of stops Bans citizens from owning guns, caught with a gun no record, oh well 2-3 years prison time with probation. the 2nd and 4th amendment dont exist here. No guns, no protesting allowed. Banned large soda's and sugar drinks from being sold Now he wants to stop new mothers from getting infant formula, and want to require that they [..] feed instead. - Crazy right, the man want to decide what women should do with their !!. If you dont want to [..] feed, TOO BAD bloomberg says. Now he is on a crusade to try and ban guns in the US, by doing sting operations outside of the state, pouring money into harsher gun laws. And telling our officers to go on strike, to not serve until all citizens have turned in their guns. Again crazy right. Oh did i mention this nicca some how got another term, thankfully he is term is coming to an end, but some how he will manage to buy another term and break the rules. Dude is a tyrant, and he is the reason why the 2nd amendment was est@blished, in some countries his head would have been stuck on a stick in the ground. | |

| Its that big brother folks...the all seeing eye. But im not tripping, im not high profile anyways [pic] I would say, its not good to give so much power to any one man or leader. There will be tons of pervs doing noting but checking out women and stuff, the racial profiling, and whatever else reason there is to just stare at you. Its the capital city of the world, but could any of this have stopped any big crimes????? we shall see............ [pic] | |
