Apr 12 - Grandmother Carries Disabled Granddaughter Six Miles To School Every Day

Tan Houyang is incapable of walking to school like other children. Her grandmother, 57-year-old Xiang Yuncui, carries her to school. Every day, Xiang walks over 3 miles of mountain paths to carry her granddaughter to school in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.

At seven years old, Tan saw the other children going to school. Unable to walk on her own, she implored her grandmother to carry her to school as well.

Tan’s disability stems from congenital cerebral palsy, which she has suffered since birth. The journey to school is arduous. Xiang has to get up at 5:00 am daily to prepare breakfast and help Tan dress.

At 6:30 their daily odyssey begins. With her grandchild on her back, Xiang sets out, carefully picking her way along treacherous roads.

[Xiang Yuncui, Grandmother] :
"Usually the morning journey is the most challenging because we have to hurry, afraid of being late for the school hour. We set out at about 06:30 and try to get to school at around 08:30 after a two-hour walk."

After a long section of mountain roads and muddy, narrow paths, she must climb up and down some flights of steep stone staircases. Tan cannot even recall how many times they tripped while the path was slick with rain or snow.

[Tan Huoyang, Granddaughter] :
"Once, my grandma had to run in order to get me to school on time. She fell down and bruised her knees. Yet she tried to hide her bleeding knees from my view at the time."

At 8:20 they arrive, and Xiang helps her granddaughter take out her textbooks.

[Xiang Yuncui, Grandmother] :
"I will keep carrying her to school as long as I can, and carry her through junior high and high school." In 2008, Tan’s father died in a traffic accident, leaving Tan’s mother to find a job and leaving their little girl with her grandparents.

Over the last three years, Tan’s grandmother has journeyed well over 6,000 miles with her granddaughter on her back. Yet, the journey continues.

If every parent had that much dedication to their kids, regardless of school budget problems, everyone would be a honor student.

Wow, I am truly moved by this story. I wish our children would read and understand how others value the importance of getting your education. I wonder if the breaking of this story will maybe prompt someone in their country to help them with a better way of her getting to school becaus such dedication on the part of the child and on the grandmother shouldn't go unrewarded .

I work for a 61 year old burmese man and only thing hes worried about is getting rich enough in america to start a business in burma just to continue his fathers legacy cause he says his fathers name is fading away. Doesnt even care about his own !!. That man motivates me like no other forreal.
