| Boxing Board arrange Mayweather visit |
| By WALTER ALIBEY Sunday, January 22 2012 An Exchange Boxing Programme between Trinidad and Tobago and the Floyd “Money” Mayweather camp has been reached. Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board of Control (TTBBC) Chairman Annabelle Davis, Special Adviser Boxu Potts and ordinary member Ruth Marchan on Friday returned to Trinidad after completing the deal with the Floyd Mayweather Boxing Gym as part of their mandate to ensure development in the sport. The deal will allow the welterweight champion to come here and work with young boxers along with former WBC Super Featherweight World Champion, EBU Super Featherweight Champion and manager of the Mayweather Boxing Gym Cornelius ‘Boza’ Edward to conduct training sessions and hold workshops for local coaches in TT. According to a TTBBC media release, Edward said he will visit TT with Floyd Mayweather’s trainer Roger Mayweather to do the courses soon. That visit will take place sometime after May as the coach has been on a busy schedule ahead of the Mayweather/Manny Pacquiao clash in which Mayweather has demanded an astonishing US$100 million purse — the largest in the history of the sport. Edward said his boxer will not make the trip to TT this time because of the Pacquiao which is expected to be in May but gave the[..]urance that he will certainly be on local shores for the next visit. Edward also promised he will take both amateur and professional boxers to his gym in Las Vegas, where they will be[..]isted with their development. Mayweather has an unblemished record in 42 fights that includes 26 knockouts and embraced the idea of the exchange programme as it will enhance the capacity of local coaches, young amateurs and professional boxers. He was elated to meet with the TT contingent at his gym where he had only just made a whopping US$100,000 donation to the [..] Cancer Society. Meanwhile, Potts explained that the development drive is an initiative from Minister of Sports Anil Roberts and his Ministry including Permanent Secretary Ashwin Creed, as well as the TTBBC. Through this programme, the TTBBC will enter communities, schools and gyms to discover talent and nurture it. Only recently, the Board opened gyms and conducted coaching sessions in four depressed areas in Trinidad and Tobago. They will continue this trend with the opening of a gym at Basilion Street, Laventille and another at Success Village. Potts said other gyms will also be opened in the sister-isle of Tobago, Siparia, Mayaro, Point Fortin, Toco and other areas. He made it clear that no one will be left behind as children from the St Michael and St Mary’s Children Homes will also be targetted in the campaign. Trinidad and Tobago's Newsday : newsday.co.tt : |
