Are Selling Mixtapes Illegal?

 Are Selling Mixtapes Illegal?
topic by BLACKTOPBALLER - 10-14-2011, 05:34 AM - Boxden > The Money Spot (finance/careers)

Yo Whats good, me and my homie was planning on selling mixtapes at my uncle's Barbershop, We've noticed how much business and traffic comes through on a daily basis.
I know albums are illegal to sell. Mixtapes on the other hand are free, the artist even makes them for free, but will getting prophet off of someone else's material be illegal?? (In the eyes of the law). Just want some info on this before we take off with it, thanks!

Note: Were only gonna sell the Cds for $3 (ea.)

It depends.

You could get knocked if the mixtape contains content owned by the record company.

You could also get in trouble if there's a beat that was done originally on an album cut.

If you get a mixtape, like MM4, that has all original beats, then it's cool.

Basically, sell something smaller, like bumper stickers, and offer the mixtape "for free" as a gift for buying the bumper sticker. Put your logo on it or something.

That way they can't really get you for anything.

Hope this helps.

I used to sell them in Highschool, take a backpack full of like 100 cd's in paper sleeves to school and make a k!lling.

Artwork on a cd is pointless, ink is expensive and then you have to cut it to fit the case. Too much work and people wil buy them even without a cover.

Do the loophole thing. Buy a pencil, bumper sticker, etc. Get free cd

If you're selling something that's 100% not your work and you didn't pay for it originally to re-sell it then it probably is illegal.

They arrested DJ Drama & Big Mike for selling mixtapes so yeah its illegal. But who the #### cares? I used to sell ni##as albums in highschool. They'd hit me up for something and in a day or 2 I'd get it to them. I'd probably still be doing it now but everybody and they mama know how to burn CDs now.

He lives in my hometown. Or at least used to. Actually met the guy. He puts in work.

He got arrested because he was putting out mixtapes with album cuts. He also had a past, too.

ni##as talking about selling them in schools and ####.

Selling them in a school is different from selling them on the streets.

You have a buffer with schools because most kids won't rat to the Feds about you. They'll rat to their homies if you're making cake, and handle it appropriately.

Big Mike and Drama were doing this ON THE STREETS, where it's anybody's game. It's nothing for someone to hit up an officer to start an investigation.

Just use the loophole with the bumper sticker, and do it that way. If you're doing it in your school, #### it. I sold everything from tapes to candy back in HS, and made a k!lling.
