Verizon Can No Longer Charge For Tethering, FCC Declares

Verizon has been slapped with a $1.25 million fine for charging customers to use their cell phones as a mobile Internet hotspot, and has declared that it must allow tethering for free. Google must also reinstate tethering applications from its Android store, which Verizon had asked them to remove. This is especially great news considering more Android devices (and perhaps the next iPhone) are 4G compatible, making mobile Internet nearly universal for Verizon customers. Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T customers should prepare to be gripped by overwhelming jealousy, as it only applies to Verizon.

“Today’s action demonstrates that compliance with FCC obligations is not optional,” said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, in a statement. “The steps taken today will not only protect consumer choice, but defend certainty for innovators to continue to deliver new services and apps without fear of being blocked.”

We’re unsure how quickly this policy will be implemented, so if you’re a Verizon mobile hotspot user, and you fall under the non-unlimited data plans that this ruling applies to, let us know when Verizon stops charging you for the service.

They can still charge you, they just can't block the apps like they have been.

Here's an app called Foxfi that I came across on Google Play that turns your Android phone into a free Wi-Fi hotspot:

I actually first read about this app on an Android forum and people were giving it alot of praise. It's gotten some descent reviews in Google Play as well.

Don't look like they charging niccas anymore. [pic]

This !! right here is that work! You can use it on AT&T, but you have to find the APK.

The site got it wrong, so ya I can read. [pic] thinking Verizon is going to allow people to use that !! for free [pic]

The FCC has released a statement today concerning its investigation into Verizon Wireless blocking access to applications (specifically tethering apps) for devices using the "C block" spectrum they use for LTE services. Under the terms of the settlement announced today, Verizon will be paying $1.25 million to the U.S. Treasury, and implement a "compliance" plan consisting of more training to ensure that they do not violate the C block rules in the future.

The issue stems from the rules of the C block auction, which Verizon bid on and won to get the spectrum they use for LTE. I won't bother going into all the numbers here, but the wavelength of the C block makes it a very desirable piece of the airwaves, and the FCC placed a mandate that the auction winner must allow customers to freely use devices and applications of their choosing when accessing the frequencies. Verizon had successfully blocked tethering apps from appearing in Google Play, including their LTE devices. This is against the rules, and the FCC had to take action.

There also are couple things here we need to keep in mind. Other carriers (hello, AT&T!) can block apps from the Play Store, as they didn't win the C block auction and don't have to follow those rules. The second is that while Verizon has to allow access to the applications, nothing was mentioned that said they had to allow free tethering on its LTE network. It can still block access server-side, or monitor accounts and charge users that download and use applications to tether. We're not sure what, if any, precautions Verizon is going to implement here, but before you celebrate by downloading Easy Tether and burning through a few GBs of data, keep in mind that few things in life are actually free.

I honestly don't see how it only applies to one carrier. Tethering charges are a bunch of bs anyway, nearly every android phone has the option but you have to pay. Its seems so easy to figure out a way around it too...

I'm sure this will roll down to other carriers but many of them never blocked wifi tetthering apps in the first place, but I think it applies to verizion because it has to do something to do with their 4g network.

Verizion knew the fcc was gonna do this moths ago thats why they released the share everything plans. Basically they just upped the price for data and now allow you to tether for free. I still think they can charge people with unlimited plans for tethering though. Now they encourage you to tether because the price of data is so high and overage fees are even higher.

Its kinda like going to a buffet and its all you can eat. You can eat all day but you can't fix plates for your kids and wife they can charge them also. The flip side of that is if you go to a restaurant and order a 16 oz steak, they can't dictate who or how you use your steak. Basically by restricting data they created a situation where they could no longer charge for tethering. What they did was block features of your phone and hoped we didnt figure out how to unlock them and once we did they started blocking the aps from the play store. But if you go to the play store today foxfi is now visible to all vzw subscribers. I think sprint is the only us network that still blocks you from seeing it.

My biggest issue was they were charging millions of customers $20 a month for tethering and they only had to pay $1.25 in penalties. I wish the fcc would regulate the cost for data usage, but I dont think they can because its not their network.

someone sift through all the bull!! and red tape and gimmie the real.

I'm on verizon, and im currently still unlimited data. I was thinking of switching to shared plan w/ data charge to save money. But I also wanna use 4g hotspot w/out paying 30 a month.

what should I do?

props to whoever can guide a young playa in the right direction.
