South Korean electronics giant Samsung says it has sold more than 10 million Galaxy devices since the first offering from the product brand was launched in June 2010.
In a Times of India report Thursday, Samsung vice president of mobile, Asim Warsi, said: "Innovative devices like the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy S2 and S3, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 2, and Galaxy Y have caught the imagination of customers and helped us democratize the smartphone experience in the Indian market."
The first Galaxy device introduced in India, in June 2010, was the Galaxy S smartphone. It was followed by the Galaxy S2 which arrived in May 2011, Galaxy Y in October 2011, and the latest Galaxy S3 this year. Samsung's tablet, Galaxy Tab, was launched in November last year.
According to the report, Warsi said Samsung has been a "category leader" in India's smartphone market since 2011. The company has 13 Galaxy devices currently available in the country which are priced between INR 6,790 to INR 39,990 (US$123.95 to US$730), he added.
Samsung declined to give a breakdown of the sales of the individual Galaxy devices, although it said the Galaxy Y and Galaxy Note series as well as the Galaxy S3 together accounted for more than half of total sales, the report noted.
According to a CyberMedia Research (CMR) report in October, Samsung led the smartphone market in India accounting for 41.6 percent of the total 5.5 million smartphones shipped in the first half of 2012. Nokia came in second with 19.2 percent market share, followed by Research In Motion (RIM) with 12.1 percent.
Nokia, however, remained the overall top phone manufacturer in India, with 22.2 percent share of the total 102.4 million mobile handset shipments in the same period--thanks to its range of feature phones. Samsung trailed Nokia with 13 percent of total shipments, the CMR report said.
