Samsung Galaxy S 4 performs well in early performance tests

Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 might not offer much in the way of an exciting new exterior design, but inside, it’s a completely different story. The retooled internals on the U.S. version of the Galaxy S 4 were put to the test by benchmark specialists Primate Labs and the results are impressive, to say the least. The Galaxy S 4 scored a 3,163 on the standard Geekbench 2 speed test, just shy of twice the iPhone 5′s score of 1,596. That score was also good enough to top the upcoming HTC One, the Nexus 4 and the previous-generation Galaxy S III. The chart below shows the Galaxy S 4′s results compared to other leading smartphones tested by Primate Labs.

It should be noted, by the way, that this test was performed with the slow version of Samsung’s new flagship Android phone. The U.S. variant of the Galaxy S 4 is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon chipset that features integrated LTE radios. The international version of the phone will feature Samsung’s in-house eight-core Exynos process, which will likely offer significant performance benefits.

Some things to consider when looking at the results:

It's clear that the Samsung Galaxy S 4 will be the fastest smartphone available when it is released in April. What's not clear is how the Galaxy S 4 will handle the increased power and cooling requirements that generally come with faster processors.

The Samsung Galaxy S 4 is twice as fast as the Samsung Galaxy S 3. Given that the Samsung Galaxy S 3 is less than a year old, that's a remarkable achievement. I am amazed at how quickly smartphone technology is improving.

The Samsung Galaxy S 4 is also twice as fast as the Apple iPhone 5. Apple has improved performance dramatically in the past (there was 2.5x increase in performance from the iPhone 4S to the iPhone 5). Will they be able to make a similar improvement for the next iPhone?

The Samsung Galaxy S 4 is also twice as fast as the BlackBerry Z10. However, unlike the Galaxy S 3 and the iPhone 5, the Z10 launched this year, not last year. Will BlackBerry feel compelled to release an updated handset with a faster processor sooner rather than later?

Android Authority only tested the Samsung Galaxy S 4 with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 SoC. We have no idea how the Samsung Galaxy S 4 with the new Exynos 5 Octa SoC will perform, but given how the different Samsung Galaxy S 3s performed I imagine the Geekbench score will be similar.

Both the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S 4 use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 SoC, although the HTC One runs at a slower speed (1.7 GHz vs. 1.9 GHz). The HTC One is also running an older version of Android (4.1.2 vs. 4.2.2), so the HTC One's performance should improve slightly once it is on the latest version of Android.

Again, I'm amazed at how quickly smartphone performance has improved. We've gone from the original iPhone with a Geekbench score of 130 to the Samsung Galaxy S 4 with a Geekbench score of 3100 in only six years.

Benchmarks are meaningless, right? For entertainment purposes only, we decided to compare the new Samsung Galaxy S4 against the HTC One and NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 platform. Keep in mind we are talking about unreleased devices and non-final software, so don’t read too much into this single test.

According to Android and Me’s HTC One AnTuTu benchmark, the HTC One performs even better than the U.S. Galaxy S4 version tested by Laptop Mag, scoring slightly over 21,089.

Sadly don't give af if Sprint never gets 4G to metro Detroit. !!s!

I have a EVO 4G LTE, The S4 looks nice. Whatever I get next needs kick a#s battery life. Sick of this constant charging with the HTC products I've had

Not sure how the Evo 4G LTE battery life was when you first got it but early reviews says the HTC One can go 8-9 on constant use and of course longer for those who are not power users.

youre either a fckin liar or you have poor reception. i have the same phone and i dont have an issue at all with battery life.

	Overall Impressions There has been a ton of hype and build-up to this device, and ultimately, it left us feeling cold. The S IV feels uninspired. There are small spec bumps from the previous generation and there's a ton of software which will largely sit unused. There's just no wow-factor here. I had the HTC One with me during my hands on time, and the difference is like night and day. For starters, the One is noticeably faster in every context. When flicking between screens, opening apps, and taking photos there was clear lag on the Galaxy S IV, whereas everything was almost instantaneous on the One. To be fair, this wasn't the final production version of the S IV, and who knows which processor was in the model I had. There's a chance it'll be faster at launch. But even purely from a design perspective, the One absolutely crushes the S IV. When you pick up the One, you feel like you're holding something amazing, both in the build and the screen. When you pick up the S IV, you feel like you're holding an S III with a few extra bells and whistles.

even oc'd 200mhz more than the one and the s4 was still laggy as !! to the gizmodo guys. on top of the fact they said it looks and feels like !!.

TBH im not even an HTC fan all like that. Im a nexus fan. Im hoping they bring the 5 to sprint. IDC if the specs arent even top dog. I am tired of running skins on top of android. The one and s4 are both great devices. obviously the one is better lol. but im not coppin either of them if i have any say in it (i got the 3d and lte for free off contract... why would i turn them down).

Geekbench is the universal test because it can be ran on iOS and Android. The King S IV is here. [pic]

So a benchmark test that is only used for Android devices is poo poo?

Also the S4 has a faster processor and a new version of Android and barley outperformed the One on the Geekbench test?

I can only imagine if the One was clocked at the same speed as the S4 and running the same version it would be a lot of closer.

HTC ONE is gonna be garbage!!!

No exuse for a smartphone in 2013 to have a 2300 mah battery... That alone makes the phone not worth it...

Every time a phone like this comes out people say dont worry blah blah blah means it wont waste alot of battery and it will last you all day...
They said the same thing about the Thunderbolt when it came out...
But a 2300 mah battery is a 2300 mah battery... Its a small battery for a phone in 2013..

No exuses... could have put a 3300 mah battery but naw they rather have everyone carry around chargers all day and be by power outlets just to watch a youtube video..
