I frequently thought aout it, but always get weary of mesing my phone up, so I back away.
What are the risks and how great are the risks?
And how can te problem can be fixed or should I be ready for possible problems that wuld lead me to have to buy a new phone all together??

I felt the same way but I'm glad I did it. You never change anything with the hardware, just the software. So if anything happens to your phone and you need to bring it to att or apple you can just restore the phone to the factory settings. It's highly recommended. And if you don't like it, you can just undo it, but you won't want to.

ok cool cuz i'm getting one in a couple weeks. i have a G1 and i'm about to sell my iphone 1st gen. i really like certain features on the iphone thats why i'm getting an apple touch.

I see that people have the changed screen icons and all that, how do yall change that? My phone is already jailbroken now, so when I go into Cydia, what should I look for?

In the bottom of cydia, click "sections" and go to the Themes section. Winterboard/springboard I think it says.

If you own a iPhone and have not jailbroken it, you are missing out on so much. The iPhone is no where near its full potential unless it is unlocked. Now a days it is safe too, as long as you dont update your phone until you see they have a new update for it....not via itunes.

How do you make sure you avoid these updates?
What I mean is, like if I connect my phone to iTunes and there's an update will it automatically get the update? or am I good as long as I have automatic syncing off? One more thing, how could I get these updates without iTunes? And what would happen if I did get the update through iTunes?

After jailbreaking here is the steps to theme your iphone

1. Go on Cydia
2. Download Winterboard (Go and search for it in Cydia)
3. Go into the theme section in Cydia and download themes
4. Start up Winterboard and apply the themes, drag for priority to the top

I Recommend downloading

1. Keyboard Skin
2. Slider Skin
3. SMS Skin
4. Icon Skin

Try out different combinations and enjoy
