why would a developer go for that when android and ios make up 95% of the market. the surface pro version which comes out a couple months after RT will do well because it will run legacy software, but windows rt has no real shot. 2 years ago they called it windows mobile..that failed. they rebooted and called it windows phone.. that's failed so far. now they're gonna call it windows rt where the only thing it has going for it is ms office and that's it. other than ms office, i can do more with my nexus 7, and I dont have to worry about my device being abandoned for updates the same year it came out (see the nokia lumia).

its no way MS is going to release a 10 inch tablet for $199 unless they use a cell phone model of forcing people into a 2 year xbox live contract or something. It cost google $160 to make the Nexus 7 which they sell for $199 and Amazon is paying around $170 and charging $199 so how the hell is MS going to offer 10 inch for the same price.

The Microsoft Windows RT tablet will be released alongside Windows 8 on October 26th. Microsoft has been tight-lipped on information about the tablet since it was announced. When the device was revealed on June 18th, Microsoft stated that pricing for the tablet would be “competitive” to other tablets with similar specifications. It looks like that pricing could be $199 according to Engadget.

With the release of the Kindle Fire by Amazon and the Nexus 7 by Google, $199 tablet price point isn’t something that is going to go away. Companies are looking to create more competitive pricing to draw in users to their platforms, even if it means they take a hit in manufacturing costs. This strategy isn’t all that different from the approach Microsoft and Sony took when they released their current –gen console, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Both of the companies suffered a financial loss during the first few shipments of their consoles so that they could be sold at a price that people would be willing to pay.

With Windows 8 being a large risk for Microsoft, they can’t afford to let an opportunity slip by. They bypassed their OEM’s by releasing the Surface Tablet line, and now they are looking to get their tablets into consumers’ hands by setting a price that people can afford. When someone is looking to buy a tablet, they will have Apple’s iPad, with a base cost of $499 for the latest model, a large amount of Android tablets, and Windows 8 tablets. If Microsoft can stick to the $199 price point for the RT tablet with all the features they are packing into it, a lot of people will see that as the best value for their money.

Engadget reports that Microsoft revealed the price of the ARM-based Surface RT tablet to attendees at their recent TechReady15 conference and the device clocked in at an unbelievably low $199.

The price would make the tablet competitive with Google’s Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle, amongst other devices, and would be a new low for 10.6 inch tablet.

On the other hand, the device should have pretty similar specs to the Google’s Nexus 7, and a larger, lower-resolution screen may actually be cheaper than the smaller 1280×800 screen on the Nexus 7. ISuppli estimates the Google Nexus 7 only costs around $154 in parts. Google have said they will not be making any profit on that device, and Microsoft may be playing the same game, working to gain market share at the expense of revenue.

If true, it may peg the x86-based Surface Pro at $400-$500, again a price which is near irresistible.

The device is expected to be announced on the 26th October and at that price is likely to be a major hit.

The $199 price would be (roughly) the same strategy as when the XboX 360 was released. MS lost so much in the beginning, but made profit after a few years in just accessory pricing.

Smart idea.

Not only did it become profitable. it became the dominant platform. and many folks did not give them a chance against sony.

They will both have the same size screen. The $200 version will only run Windows RT applications while the estimated $500 version will be an intel processor that runs full Windows 8 like a PC.

function wise yes, power wise no. basically its a netbook with an optional keyboard. but at the 199 price point i would buy considering the os itself is probably around $120 alone for the pc. plus this OS is geared toward touch computing so it would be a waste to put it on my desktop.

Ummmmm, Windows Phone 8 & Windows 8 RT, they're TWO separate OS's [pic]. That that alone makes your comment invalid. Windows Phone 7.5 is any thing but a failure, and the release of Windows Phone 8 will only show an increase in users. The Nokia Lumia isn't being abandoned for updates either, I have a Lumia 710 and I've gotten 2 minor updates thus far, and all WP 7.5 devices are getting a major WP7.8 later. Don't sit their and pretend EVERY android device receives their major updates.

I wouldn't say the Surface Pro competes with netbooks, this thing is packing a Core i5-Ivy Bridge Processor & a solid state drive, the competition here is the Ultrabook ---- plenty of power but lacking an optical drive and larger screen, but you get the benefit of more portability and a touch screen.

apps are coming everyday. And the Xbox tablet phone cross apps will only make the market grow even faster. I'll be copping and ill c how the pro version looks I'll probably trade the 199 for the pro

No apps... That's why MS is fire selling this thing to gain more marketshare and more apps its a long term strategy.

Why don't u go back and actually read my comment... I clearly differentiated between Windows 8 and Windows rT. The lumia is the flagship phone for windows phone and no it is not receiving the full windows phone 8 update.

Thats true but its gonna be hard to make that third niche in the market. Especially when Sony's releasing a PlayStation app next month on certain Android partners and isn't there an Xbox one coming as well for android

If the Pro version is really $400 to $500 say goodbye to Android and IOS is in serious trouble. Full blown Windows at that price is an instant cop. OEMs are going to be pissed if this is true. Laptop sales are about to drop like a brick.

But if the RT drops for $199, I'll probably wait for the Pro because it can't be too much more, $599 tops.
This low price might be just what they need to break into the market though, at least for the first generation [pic]

Take your own advice guy....

2 years ago they called it windows mobile..that failed. they rebooted and called it windows phone.. that's failed so far. now they're gonna call it windows rt
Windows Phone is NOT Windows RT. I didn't say you mis-spoke about Windows 8 & Windows 8 RT. What you said is that Windows Mobile is Windows Phone which is now Windows RT...WRONG

As for the Windows Phone updates, read my reply again, ALL Windows Phone 7.5 devices will get a major WP 7.8 update, its not possible to upgrade to WP8, the additional features are hardware based changes.WP7.8 will get some of the new software features & the new GUI. A software upgrade isn't going to give a phone higher screen resolution & a multi-core processor.
