Insta-Backlash:Reactions To Facebook’s Instagram Acquisition, Users Deleting Accounts

Twitter lit up with a torrent of angry tweets on Monday, as Instagram fans vented about Facebook’s acquisition of the retro-flavored photo-sharing service.

Some expressed fears Facebook would change, alter or shut down the application after the acquisition.

In a post on Facebook, founder Mark Zuckerberg tried to preempt these complaints saying the company is "committed to building and growing Instagram independently." Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom chimed in saying "The Instagram app will still be the same one you know and love."

However, some Instagram users weren't buying it- and are already heading for the exits.

Xeni Jarden, co-editor of the popular blog Boing Boing, tweeted shortly after the announcement that she was "Quitting Instagram, probably."

Jarden was joined by a wave of peeved Instagrammers who said they wanted out.

So what options are there for those who want to jump ship?

Users who want to take their photos from the site can export their pictures directly from Instagram using Instaport. The service simply pulls a backup of your account's photos and saves it to your desktop. However, according to The Next Web, you can't download single photos from your Instagram archive with Instaport - only the whole archive.

If you're looking to scrub yourself completely from the service, you can delete your account directly from Instagram with this link. Deleting your account will pull your photos, data and comments from the application completely. But once your account is removed from Instagram, it is gone forever.

If you want to explore different Instagram-like photo networks try out Hipstamatic, Vignette, Picplz or Lightbox. Each of these apps allows users to adjust images and share photos but Hipstamatic is the closest aesthetically to Instagram.

no ones scared... but this is the equivalent of my history teacher being okay with the patriot act.. He obviously is a law abiding citizen, however he had some opinionated views..in the age of "terror" threats..and even he discussed that they were being trained to identify potential cla#smate threats(loners etc) anything...as it says can be used against you.. When people are getting busted off social network isht..you will have to watch what ya say..and while Im sure the po po is not concerned with you..if they find some connection between you and something... this info will be ...used against you

I just don't get this... they'll mine it for psych data... like its really gonna add anything extra to the data that is already on facebook. Or they act like Instagram will disappear and it'll just be Facebook-agram... or saying "its too mainstream now" when there was already millions of users [pic]

Plus instagram already puts these pics online... meaning the cops or feds or whoever could find it anyways.

Because potentially if they know you smoke weed, they can link to your Facebook and see who you are friends with, find out who else you are connected to that smokes, and possibly find out who sells the !! and raid them... It's not that far fetched, that's why the gov. wants everybody's info, so they know who's connected to who and how. [pic]

even without instagram and facebook, iof you take a picture with a regular digital camera they can track you down...
