Apple Retail Stores Begin Price Matching iPhone Discounts from Carriers and Major Retailers

Apple Retail Stores Begin Price Matching iPhone Discounts from Carriers and Major Retailers
By eNcrypTioN - 08-09-2012, 03:46 PM - Boxden > BX Tech

With a number of retailers and carriers beginning to drop prices on the iPhone as the introduction of Apple's next-generation hardware approaches, Apple has officially continued to maintain standard on-contract pricing of $199/$299/$399 for the iPhone 4S, $99 for the iPhone 4, and free for the iPhone 3GS.

But a source has now revealed to MacRumors that Apple's retail stores have been given authorization to match these discounted prices from approved major retailers and carriers. In all cases, Apple will discount iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 models by $49.01 upon request to bring pricing down to $349.99/$249.99/$149.99 for the iPhone 4S and $49.99 for the iPhone 4. As with most price matching offers, consumers will likely need to cite the source offering the lower pricing in order for Apple to honor the price match.

Notably, the price matching policy applies only to Apple's retail stores and is not available for orders through the online store.

So I go into Apple Store and say I can get a 4s for 149.99 at Target and they just say "Your New Total Is 149.99 + Tax?"? And I dont need a carrier plan for this deal?

Tax applies when you buy in the Apple Store as well..to get the $149.99 price tag you have to more than likely come in talking about the deal and also sign a 2 year agreement whether you be a new customer with the carrier or eligible for upgrade. Or you pay full retail cost for the phone. If you aren't eligible for upgrade, you pay full retail for the phone.

the discounted price is still with a 2-year contract.

I have an iphone with I think the 2GB of data, and unlimited text with i think 500 minutes? !! i'm not even sure, I hardly use the phone portion of it. I usually pay like $90 a month, but I called At&t one day, and flipped out and said I was going to cancel. I got sent to a special department, and the lady was nice as !!. She told me that she could do anything in this dept, and asked if I wanted Free Texting for 6 months. So it brought my bill down to like $70.

I think its worth it, but its really up to you man. If you can afford up to $100/month for your phone with 4gb of data, and unlimited texting then I say go for it, especially if/when apple comes out with 4G/LTE on the new iPhone. [pic]

I have an iPhone 4 from AT&T but hardly talk, mostly txt so I switched to straight talk $45 monthly for unlimited talk, txt and data.. Note the data is supposedly unlimited but if you use over 2gb a month they throttle the speeds so slow you won't even want to use it [pic]

Otherwise it's not a bad deal.

Ya dumb[..] never heard of ads? And of course you have to leave your house to buy the phone, unless you buy online. F*ckin idiot. [pic]

I'm willing to bet that this is a precursor to Apple starting it's own carrier service in the future. Prices will be in the mid to high[..]. [pic]

You know the towers alone will cost billions to get them all across the nation, right? Then they will need to buy the spectrum and also have roaming agreements with carriers to have service in more areas. Verizon spends $6 billion a year to maintain their own network. They would be spending a good amount of their cash on hand in creating this network on hoping they have a good enough network to compete with the current national carriers. I'm sure they are just as happy on getting $20 billion from Sprint and probably even more from Verizon and the long term contract with AT&T in the beginning.

Apple has $110 billion cash on hand as of March. That's expected to increase to over $200 billion early next year. They wouldn't be spending close to a "good amount of their cash" if they decided to create a network. Consumers would flock to the carrier and Apple would more than likely continue selling phones on the other carriers. They already have an ecosystem that would work perfectly as the base of a carrier. If Apple wanted to do it, they could.
