Apple Removes Its Virus Immunity Claim For Mac From Official Website

In the wake of the Flashback botnet which targeted Mac computers, Apple has removed a statement from its messages on its website that Mac operating system X (OS X) isn't susceptible to viruses.

Apple removed the previous statement "It doesn't get PC viruses" and replaced it with "It's built to be safe," and "Safeguard your data. By doing nothing" with "Safety. Built in."

According to Sophos U.S. senior technology consultant Graham Cluley, this is a sign that Apple is starting to take security seriously.

"I view the changes in the messages pushed out by their marketing department as some important baby-steps," he wrote in a blog entry.

"Let's hope more Apple Mac owners are also learning to take important security steps -- such as installing antivirus protection."

In addition to changing its marketing messages, Apple has released a security guide for the iPhone operating system iOS and announced in February that OS X 10.8, or Mountain Lion, would include a new feature called Gatekeeper that would restrict which applications users can install on their devices.

Cluley is not the only security expert who has urged Apple to improve its OS protection.

In a recent interview with Computerworld Australia, Kaspersky Lab co-founder Eugene Kaspersky said the company needed to extend time frames for supporting older operating systems. For example, in May this year Apple ended support for OS X 10.5, also known as Leopard, when OS X 10.7 was released.

"Apple has stopped supporting some older operating systems but there are still millions of people using these systems," he said. "It means if vulnerabilities are found, any kind of bad guys will be free to infect these machines."

And so it begins...

Always hated when Mac heads said it was impossible for Macs to get viruses. Gotta love that Apple marketing. The OS was never adopted enough for serious hackers and virus makers to care about targeting it. It may be less vulnerable than PC but it's still vulnerable. Anything is. Once Apple gains more ground on Microsoft, you'll see a direct correlation in the amount of attacks on Mac OS.

i hate the limited functionality in their mobile OS, but OSX for their computers is much more st@ble and reliable than windows. i worked in computer repairs and ive owned multiple windows PCs, and they dont compare. best thing i could have ever done was buy a macbook air. flawless.

as far as security, i know i can catch a virus or trojan horse, but i dont surf the web like a 5 year old so i dont need any added security.

you might not but others do. Ive always hated that Apple claim... it just wasnt a wide spread OS, as stated before, for hackers to worry about. Now that Apple has pretty much taken over, whether its a fad or not is unimportant right now, more attention will be given to breaking it down and creating malware for it.

actual reason for most windows pc's crashing and doing retarded !! is companies throwing random parts together which dont work together, and using bull!! drivers..
with apple they code their os to work with the parts.

bascially what they are saying is they fina start hustling antivirus product to the apple slaves to make more money ..

i hate that apple does these chamber updates. they basically have thier perfect product and strip it down to be sold in pieces with minor improvements . but all this is just to sell security product plans and services..

You do know that all a Mac is an Intel Board and Chip with a 400 % markup because they slap an apple on the cover ......

Lol Mac fanboys always act like Windows is still a piece of !! when most of them likely haven't used it since XP. Windows 7 is the most st@ble OS I've ever used. OS X, on the other hand, introduced mad problems for me when I bought the Lion upgrade last year.

Even before that, my machine would freeze every now and then. And it's not because I was downloading a bunch of bull or had a bunch of !! going in the background. My Mac was about as clean as you can get and I still had issues.

Then the !! randomly breaks 6 months into its life cycle and Apple's saying it's going to cost me more than I paid for the machine to get it repaired, even tough it wasn't a user error. Some bridge circuit on the motherboard went out and Apple confirmed it was a fault of the manufacturing.

I had Best Buy's warranty so it's not like I didn't put the extra jimmy on, but with Apple I could have had it repaired in the same day instead of waiting two weeks for Best Buy, but !! giving them MORE money than what I paid for it to fix an issue that should not be my responsibility.

The funny thing is that Best Buy didn't have my exact model in, and they have to replace your model with the exact same model or they are forced to give your money back.

They even offered me a better Macbook Pro but I decided to take the extra money, buy a reasonably priced Windows PC (that is running better than my Macbook Pro ever did) and get some nice electronics I've been wanting to get on top of that. If you haven't used a Windows PC in the last year or two, don't comment because your perception is laughable.
