Apple Launching OS X Mountain Lion Tomorrow

Apple Launching OS X Mountain Lion Tomorrow
By KURUPTION!!! - 07-24-2012, 06:58 PM - Boxden > BX Tech

Ever coy and confident, Apple announced in a strong third-quarter earnings release today that Mountain Lion will be hitting the App Store tomorrow. The new operating system for Macs, OS X 10.8, builds on its predecessor, Lion OS X 10.7, by introducing Apple desktops and laptops to a host of features now common on iOS devices.

What's New in Mountain Lion
As the next step in the march towards a mobile, always-on future for tech, Mountain Lion brings some iPhone and iPad mainstays to personal computers. iCloud is now integrated with the operating system as early as the first boot (formerly through iTunes), allowing for seamless media porting for users already floating their data in Apple's free cloud.

Reminders, Notes, and an updated Calendar are all box-in with the new OS, appearing not only in-app but also along the side of the desktop in a concept pulled directly from the wisdom of smartphone developers, the Notification Center. Mail, the App Store, Face Time, and other apps can also be pinned to this sidebar, which, thanks to Mountain Lion's Power Nap feature, should receive real-time updates even as the beast slumbers.

Dictation looks to be taking a page from Dragon NaturallySpeaking, offering a speak-and-type function that adapts to your speech patterns with use. Sharing adds an icon to Safari (and apparently other apps) for integrating social networking posts with the application. Also quite like in iOS, Twitter and Facebook are never more than a click away.

AirPlay searches active networks for an Apple TV to use for mirroring the Mac display onto any TV or projector display in resolutions up to 1080p. Game Center brings socially integrated iOS gaming accounts to Mac play, even opening up the possibility for cross-play between Macs, iPads, and iPhones for games like (we can hope) Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Gatekeeper will help to keep the whole host of new features safe by detected and removing malicious software. Apple is finally admitting that its machines have vulnerabilities.

Speaking of which, some Mac users may be open to the threat of a wasted Mountain Lion purchase. According to Ars Technica, some early version Mac Minis, MacBook Airs, and MacBooks may not be able to run OS X 10.8 because of insufficient GPU support on 64-bit systems. Namely, Macs sporting an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 and ATI/AMD Radeon X1900 GPUs may not have drivers compatible with the 64-bit Mountain Lion kernel. Other older bits of software and firmware may also keep an aged Mac from experiencing the new OS, but most MacBooks made in recent years should be fine for the upgrade.

To find out if your system meets Mountain Lion's demands, check the specs here. Look for the OS X 10.8 in the App Store sometime during the day on July 25.

there is zero piracy prevention. Never have to register or put in a serial. Can get all the official updates you want for with no problems.
