10.6-inch Microsoft Surface tablets announced, powered by Windows*8

10.6-inch Microsoft Surface tablets announced, powered by Windows*8
By UrbanGAAWD - 06-18-2012, 06:10 PM - Boxden > BX Tech

After days of speculation and rumors, Microsoft's major announcement has just been unveiled at a press event in Los Angeles: a Surface tablet. We suspected the company might be working on its own tablet, and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed the device on stage at the Milk Studios in Los Angeles today. Discussing Microsoft's history with Windows, Xbox, and Kinect, Ballmer introduced a video of the company's hardware products over the years before unveiling Windows 8's companion, a Microsoft Surface.

Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky took to the stage to describe the hardware of Microsoft's Surface tablet. There will be two options for Microsoft's Surface PC, one powered by Intel's 22nm Ivy Bridge chips running Windows 8 or a Surface powered by an ARM chipset and Windows RT. The Windows RT version is just 9.3mm thin, weighs 1.5lbs, includes a built-in kickstand and is the first PC with a vapor-deposited (PVD) magnesium case, according to Microsoft. It will ship in 32GB or 64GB versions.

Microsoft's Intel-based Surface tablet will run Windows 8 Pro, with a thickness of 13.5mm, a weight of 1.9lb, and USB 3.0 support. This particular version will also include magnesium casing and a built-in kickstand, but will ship with either 64GB or 128GB storage. The Intel version will include additional digital ink support through a pen that magnetizes to the body of the tablet. Both of Microsoft's Surface tablets feature a 10.6-inch display, and optional Touch and Type covers.

Microsoft says suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to availability and is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-cla#s PC.

I'm very impressed by the case of it...it doubles as a case and a keyboard/tracking mouse pad with option to use stylus in addition to your fingers...spec wise it's better than the iPad, if it runs smoothly with the right marketing this could be epic.....I'm glad it has USB so I plug my camera directly into it...!! going thru iTunes the syncing it. There's 2 versions, ones like a normal tablet and ones a more high end version....so I'm guess the normal tablet will be like 500 bucks and the more high end one will be like a 1,000 maybe a little lower?...it's basically a MacBook air specs wise

Look at the price points of the new ipad 32GB and 64GB WIFI only(lowest price points)

Both over $500 and its ios which is a mobile os which obviously has limitations compared to what the surface has which is a full blown os which is optimized for multiple form factors like tablets, desktops etc...

They pretty much said the Surface will be competitively priced which means right in line with the average price going for a tablet.

As someone with an android tablet and an ipad, I'm intrigued by the Windows8 Pro version...

If it's under 800, i'm in. They'll sell these things if the 16gig RT is < 500 and the 64gig Pro is less than 800 <

this is not a tablet though. it may look like a tablet, but it is also a laptop. it runs a full windows OS on it. you can alternate between the tile view and the normal desktop view. this thing is powerful enough to be a mini server.

the 64gb ipad is over 800 dollars. this is a full on computer with specs that make the ipad look like a pile of garbage. price is going to be in the 1000 range but you will not need a laptop, tablet or desktop with this. its 3 in one.

i saw the older version made by samsung running windows 8 beta and a core i5 and 128gb ssd in the microsoft store and i was amazed at the potential. it was very smooth and the capabilities were endless.

A 64 gig Ipad is 700 bucks...The pro version of this tablet at 64gigs needs to be price under $1000 if they expect sales. You can say it's supposed to replace a laptop and desktop, but nice Ultrabooks are priced right around 700-800 with the same specs and great low end desktops can be built for the same price. It's hard to justify another $300 just because of form factor.

I think $800-$900 is the perfect price point for the 64gigs version if your plan is to get it in as many hands as possible. Once you pa#s $1000, you're losing people who will just buy ultrabooks and save 300 bucks.

yes. its not a mobile OS. it has the same windows OS that you run on your laptop and desktop. you can also connect a bluetooth mouse and keyboard and turn it into a full computer. its pretty much an ultrabook in tablet form.

but you cant compare. the ipad is 700 for a !!ty ARM mobile processor, lesser ssd space, and a BS limited phone operating system.

and as far as the ultrabooks go, they are cheaper, but they are also much cheaper to build. a comparable spec'd ultrabook is around 1k.

to each his own though.

Its def a tablet. Its the x86 version may be the same processing speed as a laptop but a tablet and a laptop are two different form factors. P.C's come in multiple different form factors(Desktops, all in one desktops, ultrabooks, Laptops, tablets). Just because the pro version shares the same architecture as a laptop doesn't mean it is a laptop. There are multiple tablet p.c's currently out, including the Samsung Series 7 slate that has laptop specs.
