| After days of speculation and rumors, Microsoft's major announcement has just been unveiled at a press event in Los Angeles: a Surface tablet. We suspected the company might be working on its own tablet, and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed the device on stage at the Milk Studios in Los Angeles today. Discussing Microsoft's history with Windows, Xbox, and Kinect, Ballmer introduced a video of the company's hardware products over the years before unveiling Windows 8's companion, a Microsoft Surface. Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky took to the stage to describe the hardware of Microsoft's Surface tablet. There will be two options for Microsoft's Surface PC, one powered by Intel's 22nm Ivy Bridge chips running Windows 8 or a Surface powered by an ARM chipset and Windows RT. The Windows RT version is just 9.3mm thin, weighs 1.5lbs, includes a built-in kickstand and is the first PC with a vapor-deposited (PVD) magnesium case, according to Microsoft. It will ship in 32GB or 64GB versions. Microsoft's Intel-based Surface tablet will run Windows 8 Pro, with a thickness of 13.5mm, a weight of 1.9lb, and USB 3.0 support. This particular version will also include magnesium casing and a built-in kickstand, but will ship with either 64GB or 128GB storage. The Intel version will include additional digital ink support through a pen that magnetizes to the body of the tablet. Both of Microsoft's Surface tablets feature a 10.6-inch display, and optional Touch and Type covers. Microsoft says suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to availability and is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-cla#s PC. 10.6-inch Microsoft Surface tablets announced, powered by Windows 8 | The Verge ____________ [pic] [pic] __________ Basically !!s all over iOS for the iPad...trust me, I'm actually making this thread on my iPad 2 and it's not the best thing in the world...if MS has made good on everything then this tablet !!s all over the iPad......just picture it Ubuntu on my Microsoft Surface and then it's sync into my xbox and HTC Titan phone? Look at the price points of the new ipad 32GB and 64GB WIFI only(lowest price points) Both over $500 and its ios which is a mobile os which obviously has limitations compared to what the surface has which is a full blown os which is optimized for multiple form factors like tablets, desktops etc... They pretty much said the Surface will be competitively priced which means right in line with the average price going for a tablet. | ||

| As someone with an android tablet and an ipad, I'm intrigued by the Windows8 Pro version... If it's under 800, i'm in. They'll sell these things if the 16gig RT is < 500 and the 64gig Pro is less than 800 < | |

I think $800-$900 is the perfect price point for the 64gigs version if your plan is to get it in as many hands as possible. Once you pa#s $1000, you're losing people who will just buy ultrabooks and save 300 bucks.

and as far as the ultrabooks go, they are cheaper, but they are also much cheaper to build. a comparable spec'd ultrabook is around 1k. to each his own though.
