It’s been selling strongly ever since. A new Chrysler 300 is on dealer lots now, meaning the original has transitioned fully into used-car territory. By offering honest pricing, affordable luxury and a powertrain for any reason or season, Chrysler had created an award-winning touring car that effectively put the American luxury sedan back on the map. Feature content on the original 300 included navigation, heated leather, a sunroof, premium audio, automatic climate control and plenty more. The Chrysler 300 was released as a 2005 model that came with a 3.5 litre, 250-horsepower V6 or a 5.7 litre HEMI V8 with 340 horsepower. Standard cars were called the ‘300’, while the “300C” designation was reserved for HEMI-powered models. Note that power output on the HEMI V8 was bumped slightly towards the end of this generation of the 300. Automatic transmissions were included on all 300s, and AWD could be paired with either engine. Rear-wheel drive was standard. What Owners Like Not surprisingly, the 300’s styling, available V8 power, honest pricing and comfort levels attracted many shoppers to showrooms-- while a plush ride, easy-to-use cabin and overall value sealed the deal. Many owners also like the generous trunk and cabin space. What Owners Dislike Common gripes included slippery handling on snow and ice—though proper winter tires will help solve this. Higher-than-expected fuel consumption is frequently reported with both engines, too. Limited visibility rounds out the list of common complaints. Common Problems Possible issues include frustrating and difficult-to-replicate electrical problems that occur sporadically and may illuminate warning lights, temporarily k#ll the instrument cluster, turn headlights off and more. Ask the seller if they’ve ever experienced problems like these, and whether they’ve been addressed or not. A “scan” of the 300’s computer system by a dealer-certified mechanic can help ensure no computer-related problems are waiting for you either. Note that though the Chrysler 300’s engine lineup isn’t noted for exceptional fuel efficiency, both engines look mechanically robust and durable. Powertrain problems are more likely to be electronics-related than mechanical in nature. Some owners have reported ‘premature’ wear of suspension components—though this may be a function of driving style, maintenance and locale. Have the suspension checked over on any 300 you’re considering, just to be safe. You’ll also want to ensure proper operation from all cabin electronics on high-end models, including the CD-changer, navigation system, power seats and sunroof. Have the underside of your potential used 300 checked for leaks, especially around the transmission and transfer case (if equipped with AWD). Note the shape of the interior’s carpeting and upholstery. Excessive wear and very excessive high mileage could indicate that the model you’re considering has been used as a taxi cab at some point in its life. The Verdict Low resale values, high-cla#s styling and available HEMI performance should make the Chrysler 300 a popular choice with budget-minded performance and luxury enthusiasts.
