The 4-Series is simply the new name for the 3-Series Coupe / Convertible. The next 1-Series Coupe / Convertible will be taking on the 2-Series name. With the 5 door (and I'm[..]uming the 3-door) keeping the 1-Series name. If you didn't already know, the 6-Series Coupe has always been based on the 5-Series sedan, making it basically a 5-Series Coupe but it has never carried the name. So they are basically trying to match the naming schemes across the BMW lineup.
Odd = Sedan (1, 3, 5, 7)
Even = Coupe/Convertible (2, 4, 6)
