Why would you convince yourself to love something you think is mediocre just because of hype?

Why would you convince yourself to love something you think is mediocre just because of hype?
By Kuchiki_Byakuya - 07-28-2012, 11:33 PM - Boxden > The TV and Movie Spot

We all anticipate things from time to time, things like big video game releases, long-overdue albums like Detox, big-time boxing showdowns and whatnot. That's understandable; that's human nature.

But if you've hyped something up to the point where you spent all your energy denying that it could very well be mediocre, or that it simply sucks in reality, and then you watch it, then you've basically backed yourself into a corner.

You're basically forcing yourself to say something is great because all this damn time you've been hyping it as great because you drank the Kool-Aid.

Then in actual fact, it sucks but you wouldn't admit it sucked. And you belittle and condescend those that claimed it sucked because they (we) can see things as-is instead of being blinded by years of hype.

I'm guessing this is about tdkr. I was let down by this movie. In this case, the hype ruined it for me and I didn't hide it at all. Now that I've seen it multiple times, I love it. I do understand what you're saying, but I'm not one who falls into this category.

certain people act like they hav to hate everything popular or that receives hype.its ok to not go against tha grain sometimes.some people just wanna be to cool and have an unpopular opinion just for tha sake of havin it

On a psychological level popularity is very powerful. We're wired to go with the group. Doesn't mean we always will but there's a huge drive to do so.

Loving this thread. Its so youknowmystelo like.

People love to be lied too. It creates a fantasy out of their mundane life. I also have another theory, maybe I'll publish it as a article when i have thoroughly thought it out.

Sadly I felt that way about Harold Miner smh
Anway...

Theres ppl who feel differently about !!. You got some who'll be like "yo it was a dope movie! Kept me locked in yada yada." Then some who'll be like "!! was a life changing experience!" Is what it is. I dont think people neccessarily FORCE themselves to be all gun-ho over some !!. I believe some people are just genuinely into some things more than others. It can be kind of annoying but hey, to each is own.
Silence of the Lambs imo is one of the best movies all time. I still watch that !! all the way through if I know its coming on on tv.*shrugs

That depends if you like TDK that much well you put imo, my fault. TDKR was good but wasn't anything special and TDK outside of Heath was the same. Compared to the other Batman films though they're great [pic]

Works both ways. I on the other hand have no such bias[pic]

Take Amazing Spiderman for instance. Despite being one of the few on the hype train...after seeing the preview clips and what not I still haven't watched yet because what I saw didn't inspire confidence really. I even tried the maybe it'll still be awesome guys![pic] approach but that !! aint work.

Hype is a mother!!er. It's ruined a lot of things for me, I just stopped buying into when I was about 23... Shoes, Movies, Music, !!, Comics, DRUGS... everything has a certain amount of hype around it, but you should always check it out for yourself and make your own opinion.

TDKR was a solid film, I still think TDK was better, but it's because I relate with the Joker more than I do Bane. I'm more of a do-it-alone type, and Bane was riding for a larger cause.

Hype ruined Avengers for me though. It was a solid flick, but it was like a day's worth of Reese's Cups when I needed a steak dinner. It ended up being too general for me, too bland.

!! HYPE

My top 10 all time (English-speaking movies at least; if foreign movies are included as well Avengers would be top 5):

1. Citizen Kane
2. Gone with the Wind
3. Godfather Trilogy
4. Avengers
5. Modern Times
6. Dr. Strangelove
7. Casablanca
8. Schindler's List
9. The Silence of the Lambs
10. West Side Story
"Avengers" top 4 Film All-Time... [pic]... About as funny as "Gone With The Wind" being #2. [pic]
