TDKR - To top avengers opening $$$

Coming off the reports that TDKR has had a very good start on foreign soil, Deadline now confirm that the additional $27+M domestic means it will top Marvel's The Avengers' $18.4M in midnight showings earlier this Summer..

It seems the decision to open with 3,700 Thursday midnight showings has paid off for Warner Bros., as The Dark Knight Rises' 2D midnights number shatters the $18.4M generated by Marvel’s 3D epic The Avengers earlier this summer. Joss Whedon's film had held the record for midnight gross set by a superhero movie (the overall record is still held by the final Harry Potter flick). “The West Coast is still selling tickets with some theaters adding 3 AM shows, this is effing huge!” a Warner Bros exec tells Deadline. Reported pre-sales of $30M and international grosses from 9 countries totalling $10.4M, means that’s already $67.4M worldwide for Christopher Nolan's Batman swan-song before it's even in wide release.

No you're right its projected to have a 195 million dollar weekend. It'll probably be more but who knows how that massacre backlash could turn out.

Um... This friday, it has made just about the same amount as The Avengers made on the friday it came out, and it managed to do this WITHOUT 3D.

There was another thread about TDKR possibly surpassing Amazing-Spider-Man's opening weekend.

I said then that I didn't give a !! about no !!ty Spider-Man and that we were coming after The Avengers.

You can't go off of midnight screenings, that is a horrible gage to look at how well a movie will do. Just look at Harry Potter, sitting at 43 million and only finished with 169 million.

Well, no. It'd be because of a tragedy that has caused theater chains around the country to bump up security in ways that people might not feel comfortable with, and some folks might be scared because of the tragedy.
