‘Snitch’ Trailer: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Battles Drug Dealers

‘Snitch’ Trailer: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Battles Drug Dealers

2013 is going to be a big year for fans of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson – seeing how the wrestler-turned actor will be appearing in such blockbuster titles as the delayed G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Michael Bay’s crazy based-on-true-events thriller Pain & Gain and The Fast and the Furious 6 (where Johnson reprises his Fast Five role as the relentless fed Luke Hobbs). However, Johnson will first pop up in another flick based on a hard-to-believe story, Snitch.

The film features ‘The Rock’ as a father whose teenage son (James Allen McCune, The Walking Dead) is setup to take the fall for selling illegal drugs, which leaves him facing a minimum prison sentence of 10 years. Johnson, however, strikes a deal with a U.S. attorney (Susan Sarandon) – in which he will act as an informant and infiltrate a massive (and dangerous) drug cartel, in order to save his son from an extended incarceration. That’s a$suming Johnson makes it out alive, though…

Snitch boasts a supporting cast that includes familiar faces like Nadine Velazquez (Flight, The League), Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan, True Grit) and JD Pardo (Revolution), in addition to fan-favorite television actors like Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead), Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire, Boardwalk Empire), Harrold Perrineau (Oz, Lost) and Benjamin Bratt (Law & Order). That makes the trailer fun to watch, as you countdown the number of recognizable stars who pop up; not to mention, consider how many of these are playing characters that harken back to their most definitive roles to date.

Overall, though the drama glimpsed in the Snitch trailer is kind of a mixed bag; the scenes with Johnson and his family feel a bit melodramatic (though, that could just be the preview format), while the moments with people like Bernthal, Williams and Bratton chewing the scenery seem much more entertaining.

On the other hand, the action sequences and set pieces in Snitch appear to be shot and executed with top-notch precision. That comes as little surprise, seeing how co-writer/director Ric Roman Waugh (who appears to be the brother of stuntman-turned filmmaker Scott Waugh, Act of Valor) spent seventeen years working as a stuntman and coordinator – with his list of credits including Tango & Cash, Total Recall (1990), Hook and The Crow, among many others.

R.R. Waugh collaborated on the screenplay for Snitch with Justin Haythe, who also penned Revolutionary Road and co-wrote Disney’s upcoming Lone Ranger. Story-wise, as was mentioned before, the film looks rough around the edges; though, the combination of solid action and engaging performances – from Johnson and the supporting cast – could be enough to make this worth checking out.

Snitch opens in theaters on February 22nd, 2013.

Cool

ill check it out. It seems like a more dramatic & dialogue driven role for The Rock so it should be interesting to see him pull it off.
