Production is currently underway on M. Night Shyamalan’s new sci-fi project After Earth, and the director and star Will Smith have been sharing a few photos from the set with fans eager to see how Shyamalan will ruin yet another movie. The good news is that Shyamalan got help on the script from Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) and Stephen Gaghan (Traffic), so hopefully the story is being reigned in. Previously titled 1000 A.E., the film is set 1000 years in the future and centers on a young boy navigating “an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes.” Smith stars alongside his son Jaden Smith, who toplined the recent Karate Kid remake. The premise is interesting enough and the inclusion of Gaghan gives me hope that maybe After Earth will serve as a much-needed comeback for the Signs director.

The photos don’t show anyone in costume, but we do get a look at the Smiths and Shyamalan on the gorgeous Costa Rica set. Shyamalan reveals through comments on the photos that this is the first film he’s shooting digitally and he’s using the Sony F65. Hit the jump to check out the photos. The film also stars Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo, and Isabelle Fuhrman. After Earth opens June 7th, 2013.

I see those gray hairs. M. Night is underrated.

This film will have to be the equivalent to the 2nd coming...

Which means, this man has already f*cked up his own career so bad, I don't even think he deserves redemption.

You must be joking. What movies are you referring to? The man makes a few bad movies and everyone hates him. Every director !!s up. I don't know why people hate M.Night so much. Dude gave us Sixth Sense, UNBREAKABLE, Signs. he writes, produces and directs his own ORIGINAL stories. He is one of the best directors working today. !! that AIr Bender bull!!. Jon Faverau !!ed up Iron Man 2 and Cowboys and aliens but people dont give him a hard time eh?

Okay... here we go.

One of the best directors working today? Ehhhhh, no. Not even by a long shot. When I think of elite directors of today, Shamalan would not even crack my top 50. His films have this detached non-sentimental quality that made it feel honest and genuine... for the first three films he made. Then, after that, his style began to reveal holes in his directorial skills, like how to direct actors, how to stage a scene, how to build tension. It seems like he had forgotten how to do ALL of those things in between "Signs" and "The Village"....

Speaking of, I feel fairly confident in saying that "The Village" is one of the absolute worst films I've ever seen. Everything... EVERYTHING is wrong about the movie. The cinematography, the score, the acting, the script, the direction, the editing, EVERYTHING sucks about that movie. And, that ending... For f*ck sake, man. That ending...

but, to give you a full view about his films, here is quick reflections on his films:

The Sixth Sense is good, but gets entirely too much inflated praise when really, it's just good and not great.

Unbreakable is a great one, i will give you that.

Signs was the most interestingly boring film I've ever seen.

The Village is a movie that I hate with EVERY fiber of my being... There aren't many movies that I hate more than that (although The Last Airbender is close).

Lady In The Water is a movie I feel gets unfairly hated.

The Happening.... Need I say more?

The Last Airbender? F*CK.

Look, I want to like the guy. But, for me, this man has more strikes against him than he has good things.

And, as for Jon Faverau, Faverau was never treated with the level of prestige and respect that M. Night was when he was in his heyday. So, not an apt comparison.

Plus, I'd argue that both "Iron Man 2" and "Cowboys & Aliens" are better than "Signs" or "The Village" or "Lady in the Water" or "The Happening" or "The Last Airbender".

Will Smith hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire recently. His last film to date was "Seven Pounds", and that was 2008... And it underperformed at the box office based on Will's bankability. Plus it sucked.

So did Hancock.

None of his movies have flopped ever. They might not be good but they've all turned profit.

Like I said. its all a matter of opinion. I can list tons of directors who are WORSE than M.night. Paul W.S Anderson etc. i can lists tons of directors that have over 5 bad films like M.Night does. But it all comes down to what you like. Unbreakable is one of my fav films.

Damn.

See, I completely disagree with most of that.

I think everything besides the twist was done well. I loved the cinematography and the cast/acting etc.

Didn't do me no harm that I had sort of guessed the twist a few months before I actually saw it, I think the build up and the hype that M. Night had gathered beforehand is what pissed people off, the expected something much more fulfilling in the end.

Whoah, hey now - don't lump Signs in there with the rest. Great film. I never want to go near a cornfield again. Very eery, very simple, small town alien invasion flick.

For me, I guess, I just couldn't stand a lot of the creative choices in the movie. The acting just annoyed me throughout... Especially out of people who are more reliable like Adrian Brody. It felt like he was straight out of community college theater with his performance, as did everybody.

I hated the cinematography. One of the things that kept annoying me about it was that everything just looked so drab and dull and boring. there are ways to shoot films like this, and really the movie had all the beauty of a wall painted grey. And, they did these weird 70's cop-show style zoom-in shots that I kept thinking "what the hell are these people thinking?!"

When it comes to the script, maybe what annoyed me the most is that this dialogue is all just... so... stilted and awkward coming out of these actors mouths... I swear, some of the lines these actors have to say, there's NO way anyone could read those lines convincingly... My jaw was dropped to the ground truly marveling at how inept the writing is. And, that's only just the dialogue. The structure of the script, the storyline, the plot-points, the climatic chase through the forest... Just DAMN, for me, the movie just kept digging itself into a bigger grave as time went on. By the 45 minute mark, the movie just tried my patience as if it was just BEGGING me to walk out.

I was never a huge M. Night fan before this film, only because I always felt he was a better director than he is a writer. For me, I felt like his scripts have flaws (Unbreakable not included), but they are saved by his direction. But, "The Village" was the first film of his in which BOTH his writing AND directing was awful. maybe it's just me. Who knows? I just find that film awful beyond belief, like a f*cking trainwreck.

Ehhh, it's how I feel, man. Once again, I feel like his writing severely undercuts his direction in that film (which the direction is near-perfect when it comes to pacing and building tension). That was a case in which "Signs" just never connected with me.

Now, I can say that I found more enjoyment out of "Iron Man 2" and "Cowboys & Aliens" than I did with "Signs"... Don't get me wrong, I want to love that film so bad, but I just can't.
