Rush Hour 4 is in Development

We hope you’re ready for more Rush Hour, because producer Arthur Sarkissian tells Crave Online that a fourth installment in the unlikely buddy cop franchise is in serious development.

Crave caught up with the producer during the Television Critics[..]ociation press tour, and Sarkissian was all too eager to spill the beans on what the future holds for fans of the franchise.

“I am working on Rush Hour 4 right now with Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan,” Sarkissian said. “I’m trying to do it closer to how I did Rush Hour 1, more down to earth, more gritty, introduce two new characters and make it real the way the first one was.”

Those worried that “introducing two new characters” means Sarkissian is planning a film where Chan and Tucker pass the torch to a younger generation might be jumping the gun.

“Maybe younger, maybe Chris is now married, maybe Jackie is married to Octavia Spencer, I don’t know. Married to Chris’s cousin, they live in Shanghai, Chris goes out to visit them. I don’t know, I want something energetic.”

That Octavia Spencer mention is pretty random, but this is where Sarkissian is in the development process – he’s wanting to try new things and not repeat the same old formula. He points to Fast Five as an example of a franchise breaking out of a traditional mold. He envisions the same thing for Rush Hour 4 – and isn’t worried about going too far astray from the est@blished formula. “Absolutely not, because you will have the characters, it will be the two of them. They’ve got to be in a world where it’s not just fighting with one another.”

Sarkissian says Chan and Tucker have expressed interest in returning. He also states that while he was disappointed with Rush Hour 3, he’s open to the return of director Brett Ratner. “If he wants to do it he’s more than welcome to do it but he’s got to do it in the right way,” Sarkissian says.

While we remain unconvinced that the world really needs another Rush Hour movie, we’re curious as to what you think. Are you ready for more fish out of water adventures featuring Chan and Tucker or is this a franchise that’s already run its course?
