Richard Roper says The Dark Knight and Godfather trilogies better than Star Wars

Richard Roper says The Dark Knight and Godfather trilogies better than Star Wars
By JFamis - 08-02-2012, 12:00 AM - Boxden > The TV and Movie Spot

Last Tuesday, 1 million moviegoers across the USA entered a theater to watch “The Dark Knight Rises.”

That pushes the domestic box-office haul for “DKR” past the $300 million mark. Worldwide, the take is more than $540 million.

True, “DKR” is lagging slightly behind the pace of 2008’s “Dark Knight,” with some fans staying away after the shootings in Aurora, Colo. The Olympics also provided stiff competition this week.

Still. It’s on pace to gross over $600 billion worldwide, making it one of the most successful and one of the most acclaimed trilogies ever.

So many franchises lose their way in chapter three. I loved the original “Matrix” and I hung in there with “Matrix Reloaded,” but I’m still not sure what the hell happened in “The Matrix Revolutions.”

What follows is a list of my favorite trilogies of modern times. And, yes, I realize “Lord of the Rings” is one of the most impressive achievements in film history. It’s just not one of the five trilogies I’d select as the ones I’d most want to watch again, starting today.

The Fab Five

5. “Toy Story” (1995), “Toy Story 2” (1999), “Toy Story 3” (2010): Redefined the animated genre. Through all three films, there was heart, humor, and sophistication. By “Toy Story 3,” Andy was 18 and on his way to college. How many parents teared up at “Toy Story 3,” wondering how their own little ones had so quickly reached college age?

4. “Alien” (1979), “Aliens” (1986), “Alien 3” (1992): We all love those jump-in-your-seat moments, and the first three “Alien” movies took scared witless to a whole other level. These movies were directed by Ridley Scott, James Cameron and David Fincher, in that order. End of discussion.

3. “Star Wars” (1977), “The Empire Strikes Back” (1980), “Return of the Jedi” (1983): I love these movies not only for the combination of old-fashioned storytelling and special effects, but also for their influence on our culture. This is the movie series that inspired a whole new level of fandom and made it acceptable to wear your movie geek-dom well into your adult years.

2. “Batman Begins” (2005), “The Dark Knight” (2008), “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012): Christopher Nolan’s trilogy is an epic, operatic, muscular, visceral journey, with great actors giving performances that rival anything they’ve done in more “serious” films. And yet, after all the sorrow and all the [rip] and all the destruction and all the darkness, “DKR” ends on a series of notes that pure pop joy. Brilliant!

1. “The Godfather” (1972), “The Godfather Part II” (1974), “The Godfather Part III” (1990): If you had the two best meals of your life at a restaurant, followed years later by a meal that was disappointing, would that still be your favorite restaurant of all time? The original “Godfather” is the most influential, most quoted, most beloved, most “repeatable” movie of all time. And the sequel might be better. Granted, “Godfather III” was a letdown, from George Hamilton filling in for Robert Duvall to Al Pacino’s buzz cut to Sofia Coppola’s underwhelming acting. But “III” does have its moments, from Pacino bellowing, “Every time I think I’m out, they pull me back in!” to Eli Wallach’s turn as an elderly don to the final set piece. “Godfather III” is better than 90 percent of the movies made in the last quarter century.

Tell me I’ve got time to re-watch only one trilogy ever again, and the choice is easy. We open on a stark closeup of a man who is visiting Don Vito Corleone on the wedding day of the don’s daughter. “I believe in America,” the man says in an Italian accent. “Americans have made my fortune...”

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ closes a great movie trilogy, but another was even better - Chicago Sun-Times

Hmm out of those five I would put TDK at like 4 actually. Godfather, Toy Story, Star Wars, TDK, Aliens.

I refuse to watch the OG trilogy out of fear of the goofiness of it all sinking in and ruining the fond memories

Yea that !! is super dated [pic]. As far as the impact on it has on society/culture its blows the Dark Knight trilogy away.

Why is GF even compared to these two?

GF is obviously the top dog, SW original is good but nothing major, batman trilogy is just popcorn fun.

List is on point. Honorable mentions and serious contenders missing could be Indiana Jones original trilogy, Back to the Future and he already mentioned Lord Of The Rings.
