| By SM - 08-08-2012, 12:52 PM - Boxden > The TV and Movie Spot With "Guardians of the Galaxy" set to hit theaters in just under two years, most casual comic book readers are left wondering, "Who the heck are they?" The little-known band of Marvel superheroes became popularized and earned their group title in 2008 and featured a ragtag team of characters from Marvel's back library who were brought together on epic sci-fi adventures. Maybe they aren't as well known as Captain America and the Hulk, but neither was Iron Man when Marvel made that film and we all know how that story ended. In anticipation of the upcoming "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie, Vulture caught up with Rocket Raccoon creator Kevin Giffin to ask him about the planned feature film. Turns out Giffen thinks the Guardians are a perfect addition to Marvel's cinematic universe. "It's the lighthearted, fun, quip-filled, bouncy stuff that fits in pretty well with all the stuff they're already doing, and going out into space will be a nice change of setting," he said. The quintet of superheroes should offer writer Chris McCoy and whoever ends up directing the film some creative leeway, too. Since few actually know who the Guardians of the Galaxy are, Marvel can now introduce them in whatever form they want. "Everyone has a firm idea of who and what Spider-Man is," Giffen said. "If you stray too far from that, people will say, 'That's not the Spider-Man that I know,' and they're disappointed. Whereas if you throw a bunch of characters like Drax on a movie screen, there are relatively few people who have some idea in their head." Vulture then goes on to detail who the five Guardians of the Galaxy -- Groot, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon -- actually are. It's worth a read, though we're a bit biased and think our rundown is infinitely better. So why not read both! ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Fits Well In Marvel’s ‘Lighthearted’ Universe, Creators Say |
