Thumbs up By katalist - 08-07-2012, 10:28 PM - Boxden > The TV and Movie Spot

What's good BX fam, I am a huge fan of movies in general but I am a collector of foreign flicks mostly. It all started when I started to go through some health issues and was stuck in bed for a good while. Not much to do so I decided years back to investigate and jump into the foreign movie scene.

I thought to myself "there has got to be more to film making then just what hollywood and NA has to offer?". So I started to collect DVD's from other countries and thought I would share some of my finds with yall from over the years.

This is not a review thread or a thread to trash NA movies, its that I know there are alot of big movie fans here and I thought I would drop some names of some of the best movies I have come across.

Most of these movies some of yall probably have already seen but if this helps even one or two people find some dope movies then the thread has done its thang.

Each day or each week I will list some new movies from my dvd collection or ones that I have seen over the years. I will post the IMDB page, a short plot summary and the poster/trailer for some of them.

Feel free to add any movies you have seen that are not from NA, as I know I have not seen em all and am ALWAYS stoked to see new movies. Let's keep this thread just about foreign movies and please no arguing or cursing in here, lets keep it strictly about film.

I know I am forever greatful for some of the movies and tv shows that people have put me onto over the years so thought I would try and do the same. Some of the movies will be well known and some will be not well known at all. I will be posting up Yakuza flicks, Drama, Horror and many other genres from around the world, I hope you enjoy!

Last Life In The Universe

Last Life In The Universe

Plot: A mysterious, obsessive-compulsive, suicidal Japanese man living in Bangkok, Thailand, is thrown together with a Thai woman through a tragic chain of events. The woman is everything he is not. He is a neat freak who keeps his dishes washed and his books neatly stacked and categorized. She dresses like a slob, smokes pot and never picks anything up. It's a match that somehow works, though. Slowly and entertainingly, more is revealed about the Japanese man and why he's suicidal and living in Bangkok.

Quick Overview:
Ever see Ichi The k!ller or Invisible Waves before? Well this is the same main actor and he does a fantastic job in this movie, along side a beautiful pot smoking female, a very well done story unfolds. Director of this movie is in my opinion one of the best in the world atm and pretty underrated.
Genre: Drama
Director: Pen-Ek Ratanaruang
Country: Thailand and Japan
Language: Thai, Japanese and English (English Subs)

[pic] The Devil's Backbone (2001) - Trailer - YouTube

Plot:
It is 1939, the end of three years of bloody civil war in Spain, and General Franco's right-wing Nationalists are poised to defeat the left-wing Republican forces. A ten-year-old boy named Carlos, the son of a fallen Republican war hero, is left by his tutor in an orphanage in the middle of nowhere. The orphanage is run by a curt but considerate headmistress named Carmen and a kindly Professor Casares, both of whom are sympathetic to the doomed Republican cause. Despite their concern for him, and his gradual triumph over the usual schoolhouse bully, Carlos never feels completely comfortable in his new environment. First of all, there was that initial encounter with the orphanage's n@sty caretaker, Jacinto, who reacts even more violently when anyone is caught looking around a particular storage room the one with the deep well. Second, and more inexplicable, is the presence of a ghost

Quick Overview: Hands down my fav movie from Del Toro, the atmosphere, acting and story are fantastic in this movie. Not your typical Ghost or horror movie, its more about story and characters then it is about gore or cheap scare tactics
Genre: Drama, Horror
Director: Guilmero Del Toro
Language: Spanish
Country: Spain and Mexico

The Decalogue
[pic]
[pic] Roger Ebert on The Decalogue - YouTube
Trailer:

Genre: Drama
Director: Krzysztof Kieslowski
Country: Poland
Language: Polish
IMDB:
Plot: This is a series of ten shorts created for Polish Television, with plots loosely based upon the Ten Commandments, directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski. Two of these, Dekalog 5 and 6, are shorter cuts from the feature-length films--Krotki film o zabijaniu (A Short Film About k!lling) and Krotki film o milosci (A Short Film About Love), respectively. They deal with the emotional turmoil suffered by humanity, when instinctual acts and societal morality conflict.

Quick Overview:
If I had to pick one peice of cinema that is my favorite it would be this right here. We might never again see a director as good as Krzysztof Kieslowski. Even the great Scorcese said this is one of the best peices of cinema he has ever witnessed in his life. For once I would have to agree 100%, amazing peice of work that I have watched about 15-20 times. This is one set of dvd's that I will never sell or give to anyone lol. 10 mini films, all fantastic, if ever see these to buy or rent grab em!

Aguirre: The Wrath of God
[pic]
[pic] Aguirre, the Wrath of God - YouTube

Director: Werner Herzog
Country: Germany
Language: German
Plot: In the 16th century, the ruthless and insane Aguirre leads a Spanish expedition in search of El Dorado.

Quick Overview: One of the freakiest movies I have ever seen, the atmosphere and acting in this is top notch and makes you feel as if you are there. This is not going to be a film for everyone but check it out if you get the chance. Things get more crazy as the movie goes on, also rumors that the Director had the main actor at gun point for alot of the movie is an interesting aspect. No wonder he is so damn !!ing creepy in this, he really seemed to take the role to heart.

TOKYO STORY

[pic]

[pic] Tokyo Story Trailer - YouTube

Director: Yasujio Ozu
Genre: Drama
IMDB:
Plot: An elderly couple journey to Tokyo to visit their children and are confronted by indifference, ingratitude and selfishness. When the parents are packed off to a resort by their impatient children, the film deepens into an unbearably moving meditation on mortality.

Quick Overview: One of my favorite Japanese movies ever and same goes for oen of my favorite Drama films ever. Some might find this boring as hell but to me its a masterpeice that should be seen by all fans of cinema and foreign flicks. Definatly Ozu's best movie in my personal opinion.

La Haine

[pic]

[pic] La Haine - Trailer - YouTube

Genre: Gangster/Drama
IMDB:
Director: Mathieu Kassovitz
Country: France and Italy
Language: French, Arabic and Corsican

Plot:The film follows three young men and their time spent in the French suburban "ghetto," over a span of twenty-four hours. Vinz, a Jew, Sad, an Arab, and Hubert, a black boxer, have grown up in these French suburbs where high levels of diversity coupled with the racist and oppressive police force have raised tensions to a critical breaking point. During the riots that took place a night before, a police officer lost his handgun in the ensuing madness, only to leave it for Vinz to find. Now, with a newfound means to gain the respect he deserves, Vinz vows to k!ll a cop if his friend Abdel dies in the hospital, due the beating he received while in police custody.

Quick Overview: Another great movie from France and one of hte top gangster flicks around imo. You like City of God, Yakuza movies or just gangster movies in general? Check this one out, very well made. This and Une Prophete show that the French are not to be messed with when it comes to crime/gangster flicks.

If you like Kieslowski (Veronique and Decalogue) check out the Trois Colours trilogy: Blue, Red, White.

Aguirre is a 10/10 easy for me, Tokyo Story and Pierrot Le Fou are classic. This is a topic I can !! with, on the bottom of the page I have an underrated thread with tons of foreign classics.
